World War Z 2 (2017)

World War Z 2 is the 2017 Movie Release , and Sequel,  to the somewhat disappointing (wait for it…) World War Z! (I know, right?) I say ‘disappointing’, because the first installment was so full of product placement and corny plot holes, that I sort of gave up on it half way through. What started out as a wicked, intense opening, soon gave way to love filled drama, and zombies that soon became more likable than creatures of terror.

World War Z 2 The Sequel

World War Z II – ‘The Relapse

Despite a very troubled production, which has swollen the budget of the movie to almost $200 million and which saw the change of almost half of the film, World War Z is now getting a sequel – aptly called World War Z II.

The Brad Pitt vehicle of 2013 barely recovered its budget on the US market (without considering the marketing costs), being ultimately saved by the foreign intake. So, obviously, the studio decided to greenlight the sequel (Brad Pitt planned from the start a trilogy, with the chances of this happening being diminished, as said, by the troubled production, as well as by the response of the fans of the book on which the movie is based).

The first official announcement concerning World War Z II was made in the beginning of 2014, when a director was announced – J.A. Bayona, recommended by his previous works in horror (he directed The Orphanage, produced by Guillermo del Toro) and disaster movies (The Impossible, based on the real-life events that followed the 2004 tsunami that hit Thailand). Then a writer also announced, him being Oscar nominated Stephen Knight, known for penning movies such as Dirty Little Things (which also brought him the Oscar nod), Eastern Promises, as well as the recent minimalistic masterpiece Locke. Of course, it is worth mentioning that he also wrote the script of one of 2015’s earliest bombs, Seventh Son.

World War Z II was first aimed for a release date in 2016, a year already filled with blockbusters from the most varied genres (Batman v Superman, Assassin’s Creed, Ghostbusters 3, Alice through the Looking Glass, Warcraft, and so on).

Furthermore, director J. A. Bayona already had a busy schedule, helming a couple of episodes of the gothic horror series Penny Dreadful, as well as the fantasy A Monster Calls (scheduled for release on the 14th of October 2016).

So, between these two, it made a whole lot of sense to delay World War Z II – is it a bad omen? Not necessarily, since in this way the writers and producers will have the necessary time to find a fitting continuation for 2013’s installment.

World War ZOriginally, the first film was supposed to end with Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) embarking on a mission to find his wife Karin (Mireille Enos) in the infested USA – with her already involved in a new relationship. However, besides the too bleak a tone, this was too similar a plot to the one of The Walking Dead. So the first World War Z ended with Gerry actually finding a means to destroy the zombies.

With the cliffhanger dropped (Gerry searching for his wife) and a finale actually depicting the end of the zombie pandemic, it seems pretty hard to come with a follow-up. Sure enough, ways can be found – such as a new pandemic, which comes as a result of the vaccines not working properly. But, quite frankly, we have seen it all. So maybe the new release date will give Stephen Knight a chance to come up with a worthy enough script.

Speaking of which, the fans of Max Brooks’ original book about an oral history of the zombie pandemic should not expect for World War Z II to follow any of the events depicted in the original source. As Stephen Knight said, the movie has now a clean slate, which means that he will probably not take into account any of the stories from the book.

So, obviously, for the moment, nothing is known about the plot. In any way, World War Z II has a respectable director that worked in the horror genre, an acclaimed writer, as well as a main star, with Brad Pitt set to reprise his role from the first movie.
World War Z II is, at this moment, scheduled for release on the 9th of June 2017, which is actually a good date, since the movie’s only worthy contender is Fantastic Four 2 (and, by the looks of it, the superhero movie’s release date will change, heavily depending on how this year’s installment performs at the box office).

Release Date : Summer 2017

Our Prediction

Blah, we aren’t all that excited.  I would rather see Pitt put his time back in Pride and Prejudice, Zombies than another WWZ Sequel. The movie has been on the shelf since 2011, and seems like it would have been a better choice.
