Thor: The Dark World (2013)

thor the dark world april 23

Thor: The Dark World serves as a sequel/continuation of both Thor and The Avengers (as well as the larger Marvel universe). In the film Thor will battle Dark Elves in a distant realm.

Details about the sequel to Thor are being kept pretty close to the vest, but I get the impression that after the events of The Avengers (SPOILERS) Thor will be taking Loki back to Asgard for a trial. I’d guess at some point one of the nine realms, of which Asgard is one and Earth is another, will threaten Asgard, and Thor will have to go deal with this. It has been revealed that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje will be playing Algrim, who in the comics was a formidable opponent of Thor who was tricked into taking on the God of Thunder, only to lose and come back as Kurse, who was far more powerful than Thor. There’s a new director this time, and while I really liked Kenneth Branagh’s take, he did better with the characters and story (which is more important) but didn’t do a great job with the action. Thor is the GOD of Thunder. He should have more badass fights. The fights in Thor were a bit lacking in imagination. I think main baddie Malekith will play more of the Loki role while Kurse is the bruiser type. This should take care of the action issues.

Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World will be directed by Alan Taylor, who directed a number of episodes of Game of Thrones. Freaking awesome. Robert Rodat and Don Payne are writing the screenplay, and there’s some evidence that Joss Whedon has input, though he’s stated that he won’t his position. I think he’s mostly there as a helper and to make sure certain elements tie into what he’s doing for The Avengers 2.

Who’s In It?

Chris Hemsworth … Thor
Natalie Portman … Jane Foster
Tom Hiddleston … Loki
Kat Dennings … Darcy Lewis
Idris Elba … Heimdall
Anthony Hopkins … Odin
Stellan Skarsgård … Dr. Erik Selvig
Zachary Levi … Fandral

What’s Good About It?

I really liked Thor, and The Avengers did a fantastic job of continuing to develop his character. If the action takes a step up, which I have every confidence that Alan Taylor is capable of doing, then this should be fantastic.

What’s Bad About It?

Marvel has really done a bang up job with their films thus far, so I don’t have any worries.

Our Clever Prediction

I fully expect Thor: The Dark World to make a whole bunch of money and be very good. This is the middle film of three between Avengers and Avengers 2, with Iron Man 3 coming first and Captain America coming the following April, so as long as people don’t get tired of this style of comic book film then Thor 2 should have smooth sailing.
