Thor: Ragnarok – or The End of the Beginning of the End is the last installment in the solo movie franchises which kick started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, obviously, everybody is expecting that, during it, Thor will finally get his moment in the spotlight, much like it happened to Captain America during the Winter Soldier events. But will it be so?
Everything seems to point in this direction, with Ragnarok being the final Marvel film before The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1. Taking into account the fact that the movie will also depict the Apocalypse of the Norse Mythology, which is in itself a cosmic event, we can only presume that Asgard, the realm of the Norse Gods, will be the last to fall before Thanos begins his battle against Earth and its heroes.
Furthermore, Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studios) also said that this movie will be an important part of Phase III. So where does that leave us?
Obviously, since the movie will be released in late 2017 Movie Releases, there is no official synopsis yet. However, we can say that we caught a glimpse of the future in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Thus, in a vision/hallucination, Thor sees that he (in some unknown way) has cursed all his fellow Asgardians to Hel (which is, in the comics, the correspondent of Hell).
Also, we know that Thor: The Dark World ended with Loki somehow on the throne of Asgard, taking the place of Odin (about which we know nothing of at this moment). Sure enough, taking into account the impending coming of Thanos, we can also presume that Loki, fearful of the Mad Titan, is still acting like a servant.
So the fact that Thor left Asgard in favor of Midgard puts him in the right position to be blamed for Asgard’s downfall, just like in his vision/hallucination.
This all makes sense, saying that Thor: Ragnarok will be one of the most important events of Phase III. Age of Ultron was, in a way, the beginning of the end for the current Avengers team, setting up the Civil War. The events depicted in this year’s Avengers were to ones to show that there is a rift between the unspoken leader of the Avengers (Captain America and Iron Man).
So the next logical step, after Civil War, will see the defeat of the Asgardians, who were (in a way) the protectors of Earth/Midgard. To be noted, we can also say that, in the comics, Ragnarok was the event which saw the replacement of the Avengers roster. So…
Of course, these are all just presuppositions based on the events we have witness until now in the MCU. The villain is, however, taken entirely from the comics.
And this enemy might just be Surtur, who is a comic book character with origins in, how else, the Norse mythology. Sure enough, he may be one of the generals of Thanos, like we have seen some other characters in the MCU. He may just be the villain to decimate the Asgardians and force Thor into a battle with little to no chances of success.
Since Chris Hemsworth will still have a movie left in the contract after Thor: Ragnarok, there are two possibilities. Either he dies and then returns (like we have seen so many characters do in the MCU), either he becomes the king of a destroyed and almost uninhabited Asgard. In any way, Thor: Ragnarok will be the final step before Thanos sieges Earth.
As said, these are all assumptions. What is actually known about Thor: Ragnarok is that it will star Chris Hemsworth as the titular character and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. For the moment, no writer has been attached to this project, just like no director has signed to helm it (although Marvel will need someone with experience in epic fantasy movies, such as Peter Jackson or Guillermo de Toro – both of which are not available, unfortunately).
Thor: Ragnarok was announced last year to be released on the 28th of July 2017. However, the date was changed after Marvel acquired (some of) the rights for Spider-Man. At this moment, the movie is scheduled for the 3rd of November 2017.
