The Devil’s Double (2011)

The Devil’s Double tells the true story of Latif Yahia, who was forced to become the body double for Saddam Hussein’s sadistic son, Uday.

Latif was an Iraqi army lieutenant with a remarkable resemblance to Uday Hussein. When this is discovered by the royal family, he is summoned, and forced to have plastic surgery to be the body double for Uday. Uday was notorious for being a sadistic bastard, using his status and power to kill and rape his way throughout Iraq. Latif was placed as his body double as a sort of body guard, and who wouldn’t want that job?

Latif’s life and his family’s life were all in jeopardy, so he had no choice but become the body double. It’s been widely known that both Saddam and Uday had doubles, so while I’ll likely not believe everything in the story, I’d guess that much of the story is very true. I remember reading about the rape rooms in Saddam’s castle, and supposedly those were primarily Uday’s. What a fun guy.

The Devil’s Double

Lee Tamahori is directing the Devil’s Double, which gives me pause, since he directed Next and xXx: State of the Union. On the plus side, he also directed The Edge. How the heck is the director of those films the same dude?
The film is based on the book by Latif Yahia, so it may show him to be a better man than he really was. Perhaps he was a willing body double? I’m actually inclined to believe him, but it still isn’t exactly impartial.

What’s Good About It?

Honestly, the trailer looks good, and the film certainly has an interesting idea behind it.

What’s Bad About It?

I worry about Tamahori directing, because there are a few moments in the trailer that remind me too much of Next or xXx: State of the Union. The parts where it looks cool to be the double of a prince might be a bit too Fast and the Furious for me.

Our Clever Prediction

It’s only getting a limited release, which sucks, cause I actually do want to see The Devil’s Double. Dominic Cooper is a great actor, and the premise could make for a great film. It may suffer from being based on a true story. Sometimes real life isn’t as poetic as fiction. Still, it’s a cool idea.
