The Book of Life (2014) – The Day of the Dead-Inspired Animation!

The Book of Life

The Book of Life is a fantastic looking new animated film set in a colorful world with a bit of a Mexican Day of the Dead vibe to it. Totally awesome.

It’s somewhat of a Romeo & Juliet tale, with two men vying for the heart of a beautiful woman. The Romeo is Manolo, who is sort of the enemy or whatever of the family of the girl. But he loves her. He eventually tries everything within his power to win her heart, leading him to some sort of wizard or something who gives him a chance to rewrite destiny, but only after facing his greatest fears. He travels to another land, which is beautiful and full of awesome stuff. I’m not totally sure of his path in this regard, but he does some cool stuff and probably wins the girl’s heart, though she’s at home the whole time being courted by a very handsome, cool dude, but he’s a jerk and a bit of a douche, so she doesn’t fall for him. She wants her Manolo.

The Book of Life

The Book of Life comes from writer/director Jorge R. Gutierrez, who has worked as an animator, designer, writer and more on a number of animated projects. No offense to him, but the far more important name associated with The Book of Life is producer Guillermo Del Toro, who adds a lot of quality and talent to any project he’s associated with. I have a ton of faith in The Book of Life for 2 main reasons: the quality of the trailer, and Del Toro.

Our Clever Prediction

The Book of Life looks like it’ll be a big hit this October. It might prove to be a little too different for some folks, but screw them this looks awesome. There are a few animated films I’m genuinely excited for every year, and this is toward the top of my list for 2014.
