Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters (2013)

Percy-Jackson-and-The-Olympians Poster

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters is the second film in the series about a teenaged boy who discovers that he is a the demigod son of Poseidon. Just like Me! I know what you’re thinking. I say, “Just like me!” A lot. That’s because my life is exciting, and stupid Hollywood keeps stealing my story, changing little details, and making money off it. Don’t even get me start on The Godfather or Twins.

I’m the Schwarzenegger twin.

Anywho, the second Percy Jackson film, which draws upon Greek Mythology for many of it’s characters, will follow Percy as he tries to save a friend who has been kidnapped by a cyclops. To save him, Percy must get the Golden Fleece, which was sought by Jason and the Argonauts.

The buddy who is kidnapped is Grover, who is a satyr. That’s half goat, half man. LIKE ME!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters

Thor Freudenthal is taking over as director for Chris Columbus, who directed the first Percy Jackson film. Columbus also directed the first two Harry Potter films, so he knows this genre reasonably well. Freudenthal doesn’t have the experience with this size of film that I’d like, but he’s made children’s films like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Hotel for Dogs, so he at least understands some of the sensibilities.

As with the first film, Sea of Monsters is based on the novel by Rick Riordan.

Who’s In It?

Missi Pyle … Fates
Logan Lerman … Percy Jackson
Alexandra Daddario … Annabeth Chase
Brandon T. Jackson … Grover Underwood
Jake Abel … Luke
Douglas Smith
Yvette Nicole Brown
Mary Birdsong
Robert Maillet … Polyphemus
Leven Rambin … Clarisse

What’s Good About It?

I actually sorta enjoyed the first Percy Jackson, but it wasn’t terribly well made. That said, I didn’t find the first two Harry Potter films to be terribly well made either, as the later films had far greater depth of story, better acting and much better direction. Here’s hoping Percy Jackson will enjoy the same maturity.

Also, Alexandra Daddario is ridiculously hot.

What’s Bad About It?

Logan Lerman looks like a chipmunk. I don’t like that. At least Daniel Radcliffe had the decency to look like a future child molester.

Our Clever Prediction

I expect Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters will do decent business, but the first one, which was intended to be the next Harry Potter, failed to live up to expectations. I’m betting the budget will be severely reduced for Sea of Monsters, and with the lowered expectations it might be considered a success. I will buy all the toys though. Cause I love me some toys inspired by Greek Mythology. I’m going to get the lightening bolt, trident and winged shoes of Hermes!!!!
