Only Lovers Left Alive (2014) – Loki as a Vampire?

only lovers left alive

Only Lovers Left Alive is a new vampire film about two centuries old vampires who have been in love for their entire undead lives. They reunite their disfunctional love and struggle to get through their days.

The two vamps, who are wonderfully named Adam and Eve (OOOOOOOOO symbolism!) have a difficult and strained relationship. Basically, they’re no good for one another, but they also love the hell out of each other and can’t quit one another. Adam is a rock star, and Eve is his muse. Drinking blood is essentially their drug, and they partake quite a bit. Eve also has a sister who plays the role of vampire a little more than Adam and Eve, and is an even more destructive force than they are.

And so they kill, drink blood and party like badass rock stars.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Jim Jarmusch wrote and directed Only Lovers Left Alive. He’s a talented dude with somewhat eclectic taste, as he wrote Ghost Dog and Broken Flowers, as well as the 90’s Johnny Depp movie Dead Man. He’s not a bad writer or director, though he hasn’t really had the kind of breakout success necessary to make him a legend.

Only Lovers Left Alive Trailer

Only Lovers Left Alive Release Date

TBA 2014.

Who’s In It?

Tom Hiddleston… Adam
Anton Yelchin
Tilda Swinton… Eve
John Hurt
Mia Wasikowska… Ava

What’s Good About It?

Only Lovers Left Alive looks like a solid film, with some absolutely outstanding performers. The trailer also looks solid, and casting vampires as rock stars is an easy way to handle the persona of these undead but attractive fellows. Anne Rice probably did it better with Lestat, but it still works.

What’s Bad About It?

I’m a little tired of vampires.

Our Clever Prediction

Only Lovers Left Alive will probably fail to find much of an audience, but Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton should perform more than well enough to make it worth a watch.
