‘Mission Impossible 5’ is getting closer to it’s summer release, and we have the new trailer. The new MI5 looks better than ever. Yes, I said it. Tom Cruise may have finally turned this franchise around, the new MI5 movie looks as good as the first one. There’s good news and bad news for Mission Impossible fans. Good News: Tom Cruise is back. Yay! Bad News: it won’t be directed by Brad Bird. Booo!
The fifth installment in the action-adventure franchise, that started as a vehicle to superstardom for Tom Cruise, found a new groove in the fourth film, largely thanks to Bird, who had previously directed animated classics like The Iron Giant, and The Incredibles. This time the other members of the team also got their chance to shine, although Cruise was still the main focus. The film was a hit at the box office, earning $694 million worldwide.
Now, a fifth film was a certainty, but people were also expecting Bird to reprise his role. Instead, Christopher McQuarrie, who worked with Cruise in the recent action movie Jack Reacher, was hired to direct the film. His screenwriting credits include The Usual Suspects, but he won’t be penning the script this time. Drew Pearce, who co-wrote Iron Man 3 with Shane Black, will be writing the script. I don’t know why they didn’t just go ahead and hire Black to direct the movie instead of McQuarrie, but if I had to guess, I would say Cruise’s wishes played a role, he is co-producing the movie, after all.

M I 5 Trailer
Here’s the new Mission Impossible 5 Trailer.
The Good Stuff
When it comes to “dumb fun” movies, the Mission Impossible movies trump many of the Bond movies for me. I like the team dynamics, and the disguises. I think MI:4 got it right in terms of tone and handling an ensemble. I hope McQuarrie is similarly sensible.
The Bad Stuff
Cruise is producing the film, and he has a tendency to make these movies center around him, but he can be overbearing. It’s the other, more interesting characters, that provide flavor to these movies.
