A familiar face is returning to host the Oscars her second time. After Seth MacFarlane’s frat-boy humor drew the ire of many self-proclaimed arbiters of good taste, the producers have turned to a woman to assume the prestigious mantle, and presumably bring safer, cleaner jokes with her. Famous daytime talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has been announced as the host for next year’s Academy Awards, which, judging from her previous Oscar monologue, will be mildly amusing and mostly bland.

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced:

We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars. As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen’s gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are.

DeGeneres responded to the announcement, saying:

I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say – the third time’s the charm!

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said:

I agreed with Craig and Neil immediately that Ellen is the ideal host for this year’s show. We’re looking forward to an entertaining, engaging and fun show.

Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said:

Ellen is talented, wonderfully spontaneous, and knows how to entertain a worldwide audience. She’s a big fan of the Oscars; we’re huge fans of hers. It’s a perfect match.

DeGeneres is known mostly for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a syndicated talk show that started in 2003. Before that she was known for two eponymous sitcoms. In 1997, she came out as a lesbian in The Oprah Winfrey Show, and has been a popular LGBT figure ever since.

The Academy Awards will be presented on March 2, 2014, and will be broadcast in the US on the ABC television network.
