Drive Hard is a new action film about an American thief living abroad, in Australia I believe, who robs a bank while getting driving lessons. The twist is that the driving instructor is a washed up race car driver, who is held hostage, and forced to be the getaway driver.
I actually don’t totally mind the concept here, except for a few things. First, this is basically Getaway, except not being held back by Selena Gomez’s extremely limited acting. Second, well, that first one keeps getting to me, but the concept needs to be handled correctly to not be just lame and stupid.
So John Cusack is the thief, and he stops off at the bank during his driving lesson to rob the place, and then his driving instructor is caught up in the whole affair. There turns out to be more to the situation though, OBVIOUSLY, because it’s not just the cops that are after them, but the mob too. Uh oh.
But no doubt by the end the race car driver guy stops being such a loser who gave up on his dreams and does something heroic or at least brave and turns things around for himself. Sweet. Good job, dude.
Drive Hard comes from director Brian Trenchard-Smith, who I think we’ll all remember from his legendary work on Leprechaun 4: In Space (I’m not kidding, that’s a film). OMG I just want to watch Leprechaun IN SPACE. SCREW DRIVE HARD. He also directed a film called Out of the Body in 1989, which was about a killer who could fly and was cutting out women’s eyes after killing them. And some schmuck has a psychic link to the killer and tries to stop him. HOW HAVE I NOT BEEN FOLLOWING THIS DUDE’S CAREER?

John Cusack . . . Simon Keller
Thomas Jane . . . Peter Roberts
Zoe Ventoura . . . Agent Walker
What’s Good About It?
Drive Hard has a decent enough trailer, and the leads, John Cusack and Thomas Jane, are both capable dudes. I’m actually more of a Tom Jane fan than I would normally admit, but we’re buddies and I know you won’t judge me.
HEY! WHAT WAS THAT LOOK? DON’T ROLL YOUR EYES AT ME? DID YOU EVEN SEE TOM JANE’S FANMADE PUNISHER FLICK? I DIDN’T THINK SO.
What’s Bad About It?
I think this is John Cusack’s 45th film in the last two years. I’m not sure he even reads the scripts anymore.
Our Clever Prediction
Drive Hard will fail. No two ways about it. It doesn’t look bad, but it’s a basic driving film that doesn’t have a ridiculous budget and Vin Diesel. This is not a bro film. That’s actually a good thing in general, but it doesn’t bode well for the box office. Sorry.
