Welcome to the Rileys (2010)

Welcome to the Rileys tells the story of a couple who must come to grips with the death of their daughter. James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart, and Melissa Leo star.

After the death of their daughter, Doug and Lois Riley have marital problems. During a business trip to New Orleans, Doug meets a young stripper (sounds promising) who becomes a surrogate daughter to him, and eventually to his wife as well (that was disappointing). Their emotional journey leads to them excepting their daughter’s death. Well, probably. I’d have Doug bang the stripper. Because he’s sad.

The Scoop

Director Jake Scott mostly has music video credentials, so this may prove to be too heavy a topic for his first film. But with Ganolfini and Leo starring, he may have the talent at his disposal to make a decent film. Maybe even Oscar bait. And Kristen Stewart reminds me of an underage stripper, so perfect casting there, too.

What’s Good About It?

Welcome to the Rileys has a lot of potential. James Gandolfini is still a great actor, regardless of him doing nothing of note since the Sopranos, and Stewart might surprise people with a capable dramatic turn.

What’s Bad About It?

Unproven director, and who’s to say Stewart is going to be good? She looks the part in the trailer, but she was in Twilight. Not exactly a series known for it’s acting.

Our Clever Prediction

I expect Stewart’s drawing power to be seriously tested, and prove unreliable unless she’s being tag teamed by a vampire and werewolf. I see some decent critical praise for Welcome to the Rileys, but still a low box office.

But you’ll love it. Yes, you will.
