Growing Up Twisted Review

Dudley 'Booger' Dawson August 4, 2010 4

When I was in grade 9, there were a few things in life I was pretty sure about. One : That beautiful blonde two desks in front of me, Crysta, would never, ever, know I existed. Two : I wanted to Rock. I WANTED TO ROCK!

So it was back in 1983 when I first discovered Twisted Sister, and how the video for We’re Not Gonna Take It’ made me stay up to check it out, every time MTV played it. When I had the chance to check out ‘Growing Up Twisted‘ , I jumped at it. I’m a rocker at heart, I needed no justification to watch Dee Snider and his unusual life.

The Truth

Growing Up Twisted is fun, it delivers. Dee’s family is fun, because they are so unusual and real. His life hasn’t been the success story since his short music career, but he’s made the most of it.

Growing Up Twisted brings you in for a much closer look at the life of the short-lived rocker. A life that has had more downs, than ups, without the glamorous lifestyle that we are far too often presented with, in the reality tv genre.

The Snider family is unusual, but lovable. They are an off-beat but tight-knit family with children who are fiercely independent and strong-willed: Jesse is an aspiring rock musician, husband and new father; Shane is the resident comic; Cody’s a budding filmmaker; and Cheyenne is daddy’s little girl, making the tough transition to teenager.

Why should I watch it?

Because, the other show about the retired rocker.. you know.. the one about Gene Simmons… it’s far too corny and contrived. Growing Up Twisted is more down to earth.

What I learned

That girl I had a crush on in 1983, she actually looks a bit like Dee Snider now. Why didn’t my father tell me the hot girls rarely turn out to be attractive when they grow up? Always go for the late bloomers people…

The Verdict

Growing Up Twisted is fun, it’s real and the Snider’s are the most interesting family on TV today. Move over Gene, your time is up.

    I watch both and for me the difference is you see the flaws in the Sniders and not so much in the Simmons family…the Snider family has an obvious passion that makes me smile…I have never met two perfect children in one family before and find it hard to swallow, but I do believe it…A week with the Simmons or a week with the Sniders? The answer is obvious…fun with a crazy family that loves and lives or with a family that sleeps in on saturdays?….

    I saw this for the 1st time & thought complete opposite. Gene’s show keeps me hooked & entertained. Something about their family is fun & attractive. The Twisted show felt cheesy & amateur.

      @NW,

      I respect this, but Family Jewels is just so fake… but hey, to each their own.
