Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama about surgical interns, residents and their mentors set in a fictional hospital called Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital.
Grey’s Anatomy
This series shows us just how insane the hours that doctors put in during their medical training. Yet even when they barely have time for social lives outside the hospital, there are still a lot of drama that can happen with all the relationships going on between the doctors and nurses resulting to unplanned pregnancies, marriages, divorces, one-night stands, being left at the altar and even a syphilis epidemic in the hospital. Add some incredible scenarios that all seems to happen to this particular hospital like bomb explosions, icicle impalement, death by horrific bus accident, stage 4 cancer, schizophrenic sibling, alcoholic father/boss, near death experiences and a gunman opening fire in the hospital, all the more makes this series and its characters very interesting to watch.
The series has been running since 2005, and is most popular with women 20-45. Fans of the show enjoy the soundtrack every episode has playing in the background and the handsome leading men most medical dramas have in them.
Season 8
In Season 8 we continue to see the characters grapple with their relationships and career pressures and issues from where they have left off in the previous season. Dr. Meredith Grey who has been fired from Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital is adjusting to having just adopted a baby while her relationship with Dr. Derek Shepherd is on the rocks. This could mean more couple drama between the two as their relationship has been relatively quiet the past season. Dr. Christina Yang and Dr. Owen Hunt need to come to a decision with their unplanned pregnancy. Will Dr. Yang choose her career or motherhood and marriage? Can she have both? Dr. Callie Torres, Dr. Arizona Robbins and Dr. Mark Sloane will definitely have some very rich storylines as the three parents will try to raise baby Sofia together. Dr. Alex Karev deals with the consequence of his tattling on Dr. Grey and Dr. April Kepner will have plate full as the new Chief Resident. And I’m sure there will be more incredible scenarios that the characters will find themselves in to make for interesting plots, beginning with giant sinkhole in Seattle that will happen in the season premier.
I love how the series has shown the audience how the characters evolved and illustrate their back stories/backgrounds to explain what makes them who they are. We can see Meredith evolve from a person afraid of committing to marrying Dr. Shepherd eventually taking their relationship to the next step by adopting a kid together. The extremely competitive Dr. Yang who has admitted that she does not ‘do’ relationships has finally met her match in Dr. Hunt and gradually become more comfortable with feelings and emotions. Dr. Miranda Bailey is has become somewhat of a “mother-figure” to the interns, a departure from her tough personality and blunt attitude when the show started. I would like to see, though, the resident “bad boy” Dr. Karev finally finding the girl for him. I really thought it was going to be Dr. Izzie Stevens.
Season Premiere
September 22, 2011 (Thursday) 9|8c on ABC
Trivia
Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo, one of the series major characters will end their contracts after this season. Pompeo has hinted in the past that she might not renew her contract when it expires. Lately, she has said that there has been no final decision yet if this could be her last season, saying she has not been formally asked to return after Season 8 so she’s not presuming anything. While Dempsey has said on an interview that season 8 will be his last as he can’t see himself doing it anymore. But he suddenly backtracked via his publicist and said that he just means that his contract will be up and he doesn’t know what the future holds. Are they following the footsteps of ex-cast mates T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl and leave the show? Or is this some sort of negotiating tactic to up their salary? Creator Shonda Rhimes has said that she would be approaching Season 8 as if it could be the last for any or all of the remaining original cast members. So we shall see.
