Deceit, jealousy, loss, passion, revenge, rage, duplicity, guilt, intrigue… ooooooh… I’m loving the sinister themes in ABC’s newest serial drama, Revenge. As the lead character states, “This is not a story of forgiveness.” Set in The Hamptons, one of the most expensive zip codes in the world with its beauty, status and extravagant lifestyle lays an ominous plan waiting to be realized in this exclusive community.
Beautiful Emily Thorne moves to The Hamptons where she met some of her wealthy neighbors, made a few new friends and seemingly blends into the town. But something is a little odd about this young woman living in a wealthy town all on her own, and the truth is that Emily isn’t exactly new to the neighborhood. Her real name is Amanda Clarke and The Hamptons was once her old neighborhood, until something bad happened that caused the death of her father, Davi,d and destroyed her family. Now she is back, and she’s returned to right some of those wrongs in the best way she knows how–with a vengeance… And one by one, they must pay.
I know the pretty Emily VanCamp who from Everwood and Brothers & Sisters. And in this adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo, she unleashes her darker side as her character, Emily Thorne, quenches her thirst for vengeance. And it goes to show that revenge crosses time and culture—it is universal, as the creator of Revenge, Mike Kelley has stated. To paraphrase Abbe Faria in The Count of Monte Cristo, vengeance is god’s. But you can’t help but root for Emily because of the injustice she and her family has suffered. I can’t wait to see how it will all turn out.
Emily Thorne is the newest arrival in the Hamptons and by all appearances, she’s a friendly and sophisticated “girl next door,” whose disarming charm and generosity allows her seamless access to the restricted circles of Hamptons high society. But she has a dark secret. Her real name is Amanda Clarke and when she was a nine year old girl, her father was framed for a horrific crime by the friends and coworkers he trusted and sentenced to a life in prison— Amanda’s life was destroyed and she never saw her father again. She ended up in juvenile detention and on her 18th birthday inherited the wealth of the company her father invested in. Now, seventeen years later, she has returned under an assumed identity with one endgame—REVENGE, swearing that the lives of the people responsible would come crashing down around them. Her goal is unwavering and her sharp mind is always five steps ahead.
Emily’s closest friend is the social climber on the rise, Ashley Davenport. Making a name for herself as the go-to event planner, she has the skinny on all the inner circles of the Hamptons, and access to all events in the elite social scene. She hopes to gain entrée into Victoria Grayson’s good graces and solidify her status amongst the Hamptonites.
A useful accessory or a live wire threat to Emily’s true agenda is Nolan Ross. He knows all of Emily’s secrets and he shares a link to her past and present. He is a tech genius and social misfit. Even though he has more money than nearly anyone on the island, the pompous and arrogant Nolan learned that it takes more than vast fortune to cull social acceptance in the Hamptons.
Emily’s ultimate target is Victoria Grayson, the reigning Queen of The Hamptons social scene. As the matriarch of the Grayson family, she is glamorous, powerful and appears to have it all: the perfect husband, children, and home. But these are just the trappings that house a much darker secret—her culpability in the events that destroyed Emily’ life. She is married to the billionaire, Conrad Grayson. He’s the shrewd and successful CEO of Grayson Global who is well respected among his peers in both business and Hamptons’ society. Ruthless and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure he slithers out of potentially scandalous situations unscathed, he operates with questionable moral integrity with skeletons of previous scandals to prove it.
Victoria is strikingly suspicious of her new neighbor Emily, who’s taken a keen interest her son, Daniel who is an all-American golden boy of privilege. He has returned to the Hamptons after a semester at Harvard Business School, struggling to face the demons of his past and re-imagine the life he wants to live and the man he wants to be. In this fragile state, Daniel’s unable to resist Emily Thorne’s beauty, kindness, and wise counsel, unknowing that he is the entrée she’s counting on to infiltrate and bring down the family that’s invested so much in him.
Daniel’s sister, Charlotte “Charlie” Grayson, is a rich coquettish teenager always on the prowl for fun. Conrad Grayson’s pride and joy, she easily fits right in with the “mean girls” of the Hamptons, but there’s a curiosity streak that draws her to the troubled boys from the “wrong side of the tracks.”
As Emily carries out her plans, an old childhood friend, Jack Porter, recognizes her as Amanda. A blue-collar son of a dock worker, Jack longs to sail around the world and carve out an adventure of his own but helping out his hard luck family manage the Stowaway Tavern has kept him landlocked. With his intimate knowledge of Emily’s former life as the little girl he knew as Amanda Clarke, Jack’s growing interest in the strangely familiar new girl could throw a serious wrench into Emily’s carefully crafted agenda.
Jack’s troubled kid brother, Declan Porter, is both intrigued and aroused by the wealthy world of the elite vacationers that populate his town every summer. His interest finds a target in the sassy but good hearted Charlotte Grayson.
