Toy Story 4 – A New Beginning

As if there was any doubt, there is indeed going to be a Toy Story 4. The love of the sequel continues, as Woody, Buzz and the boys are back for the new Toy Story Movie coming in 2017. Toy Story 3 was a massive success for Pixar, both critically as well as at the box-office. The third installment in the beloved franchise secured 2 Academy Awards from a total of 5 nominations and amassed $1.06 billion dollars worldwide. So was there any doubt that there will be yet another sequel?

Quite frankly, it was. The third part of the franchise ended up with Woody, Buzz and Co. given into the care of a young girl named Bonnie, after Andy went to college. This was just the perfect ending for a trilogy that captivated the hearts of both children and adults alike. Even more, after the release of the third animated film in 2010, the powers that be repeatedly said that there won’t be a follow-up.

Of course, it was expected from Pixar to not let the characters just vanish, since they are basically the faces that put the studio on the map. Thus, 3 shorts and 2 TV specials appeared in the meantime: Hawaiian Vacation (screened with the release of Cars 2), Small Fry (screened with the release of The Muppets), Partysaurus Rex (screened with the release of Finding Nemo 3D), as well as Toy Story of Terror and Toy Story that Time Forgot.

So it was quite a shocker when Disney and Pixar announced Toy Story 4 in the beginning of November 2014. According to John Lasseter (who directed the first two installments and also acts as a chief creative officer at Pixar and Disney Animation), the ending of the third installment was so perfect that they simply didn’t even consider making a sequel.

However, when the writers of the original movie came up and presented their new ideas, he was immediately convinced. Even more, John Lasseter also signed to direct (later one, a co-director was announced, him being Josh Cooley).

As said, the toys being handed to Bonnie was the fitting end for a story arc which began in 1995. So Jim Morrison (Pixar President) said that this new installment will not act as a sequel, but it will be a stand-alone film.

He also said that it will be a romantic comedy, a love story. And then he added that, “it will not put too much emphasis on the interaction between the characters and the children.” Sure enough, there were hints of romance in the previous installments too. However, the evolving relationship between the toys and the growing Andy was, in a way, essential for the franchise. What could Morrison’s vague statement imply?

At this moment it isn’t certain. What is certain is that Toy Story 4 has found its directors, as well as its writers (Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who penned together Celeste & Jesse Forever), who will work on a story proposed by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich.

What’s Toy Story 4 About?

The rumor is that Toy Story 4 will see the return of the main cast of the previous installments. However, neither Tom Hanks (Woody) nor Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) was confirmed by the studio. Of course, having this in mind as well as what Morrison said, anybody can speculate that Toy Story 4 will introduce a set of new main characters.

What is certain, though, is that Pixar and Disney have settled for a release date: Toy Story 4 is scheduled on the 16th of June 2017, so about 22 years after the debut of the first one. Who would have thought that this would be such an enduring franchise?
