The Way Back (2011)

The Way Back tells the true story of soldiers who escape from a Siberian gulag in 1940.

Big deal, I once escaped from a Hardee’s. Granted, no one was holding me prisoner, but the doors were really heavy. And I had just eaten their food, so I could feel the runs coming.

The soldiers being held in the Gulag, once they escape, must travel through the harsh environment of Russian to get to India. I don’t want to ruin the ending, but at the end Captain America kills them all with his shield.

Decapitates them.

The Scoop

The film is being directed by Peter Weir, who made such films as Master and Commander, The Truman Show, and Dead Poets Society. He doesn’t do a ton of work, usually about one film every five or six years, but they tend to be well made, so he is picky about what he decides to spend time on, which makes me think this’ll be good. He also wrote the screenplay, so he must really have a desire to see this made.

Who’s It For?

The film hasn’t been rated yet, but I’d guess R.

What’s Good About It?

This is a big film for Jim Sturgess, who looks to be the lead in the film, and if he can hold his own with Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, and Mark Strong, he could be a big leading man in no time. Saoirse Ronan has also had a lot of success in recent in years, with her nomination for Atonement and working in The Lovely Bones. Between the two of them, there could be two future Oscar winners who are presently not terribly well known in the cast.

What’s Bad About It?

I’m not totally sold in Peter Weir. His films, while always solid, generally lack something that would make them truly great. For all the great performances and solid story in Master and Commander, it isn’t the film I would have thought it would be. Same goes for the Truman Show. Dead Poets Society is a classic, though I’m not in love with it like some, so you know he has talent, but I’m just not totally sold.

Our Clever Prediction

I see a low box office. This has Colin Farrell, who is really talented, usually picks interesting stuff, and is at this point essentially box office (what’s the opposite of gold?) dogshit.

That’s the best I could do to figure an opposite of gold.
