The Rite (2011)

The Rite tells the story of a young seminary student who has become disillusioned about his faith who travels to Italy to study exorcism, and ultimately finds his faith through his experiences with demonic forces.

No word as to how closely the movie will follow the book it is based on, but the book told the story of a priest going through exorcism training. The book showed the differences between Hollywood exorcisms and the real thing. Some myths were debunked, while others seemed to have been confirmed. Both the author and the priest found reassurances for their faith through their experiences.

The Scoop

Directed by Mikael Hafstrom, who previously directed the underrated Derailed, The Rite is looking to be a more conventional horror film than a serious look at the rite of exorcism. Until the trailer is released or at least more info on the story is made available, it will be hard to exactly pinpoint the tone and style of the film. Fortunately, Hafstrom has shown himself to go in different directions than what would be traditional in film. (I base this opinion entirely on Derailed, but it was good)

What’s Good About It?

I haven’t read the book, but after looking into it for this preview, I plan to. I like Hafstrom, and more importantly I like him for The Rite. I hope that he takes the story seriously and doesn’t turn it into an anti-Catholic soap box film. Plus, Anthony Hopkins is always captivating on screen. And Alice Braga has been tightening my pants for a while now.

What’s Bad About It?

I need a trailer before I know how high my hopes should be. If this goes the conventional route of basic Hollywood horror, then I may mostly give up on it. I’ll still see it, just to see Hopkins and Braga, but it may end up more of a flop than a hit.

Our Clever Prediction

I see a decent box office. If it straddles drama and horror it may find a solid audience. I doubt it’ll be huge, but it should be solid. Hafstrom directing means theres a good chance the critics will like it. Fingers are crossed. (crossed to ward off EVIL!!!!)
