Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is a follow up to the 2009 smash hit starring Robert Downey Jr. as the world’s premiere detective and Jude Law as his sidekick Dr. John Watson.

Few details are currently known about the sequel, although the first film left plenty of clues as to the possible storyline. No doubt Professor Moriarty will play the main villain this time around, although to what extent is not currently known. The previous film did a bit of reinventing of the character, making him more of an action hero than the traditional private dick he’s been portrayed as. For those of you who haven’t read the books, Professor Moriarty is the foe that killed Sherlock Holmes, only before Doyle decided to bring his character back to life after a public outcry over his famous character’s death.

The Scoop

Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams are all expected to return for the sequel, which should start filming this fall. Rumors have circulated as to who will play Moriarty, with the latest news being Daniel Day-Lewis will be playing the role. Best. Casting. EVER. But it seems to be untrue for the moment.

Who’s It For?

Who’s In It?

Interesting Fact

Professor Moriarty was also the villain in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Oh, sorry. Was that a spoiler? I guess I did ruin the surprise, although to be honest, it was kinda stupid.

And Bruce Willis was a ghost the whole time in The Sixth Sense.

What’s Good About It?

I’ve read all the Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories and I enjoyed Ritchie’s version of Holmes. The end got to be a bit too ‘action movie’ and I was a bit disappointed with how it came together, but the interplay between Holmes and Watson was a lot of fun. If they bring in Moriarty, especially with Day-Lewis playing him, then I think this’ll be a great sequel.

What’s Bad About It?

As good as the first film was at times, in the end there were some major flaws that could ruin the second movie. I just want to see a cerebral film with Sherlock and Moriarty dueling with their minds, and not their fists. It could turn into a boring sequel if they make it another action yawn. I mean yarn.

Our Clever Prediction

It’ll do well at the box office. Downey has turned into a very bankable star, and the first was fun enough to get people to come back. If they fix some of the flaws from the first, it could turn into a definitive version of an action heavy Sherlock Holmes.

  1. I CANNOT WAIT !!!!!!!!!! I have seen Sherlock Holmes 20 times in 2 weeks. In fact I got it for Christmas from my daughter Hannah!!!!!! GO GET THEM ROBERT DOWNEY JR,JUDE LAW,& RACHEL MCADAMS

  2. I loved the first Sherlock Holmes! I even have it at my house. It would be an awesome thing to see Sherlock Holmes and Professor Myartiy battling with there fists and minds. good luck to the director and the producer and everyone on the crew inludeing Robert Downey Jr.

  3. I loved the first movie. The action, I thought was a very good addition to what could’ve been a turn off. Yes the boxing was a bit much and I didn’t really see the point, but the rest of the action was brilliantly orchestrated.

Daniel Day Lewis is the only choice of Moriarty that I’ve heard of in the press, that I like. I am disappointed that they have changed the writers for the 2nd movie as I thought the dialogue was excellent and plot well thought out. Bringing in the obsessive manner that people of that time had in the supernatural. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was in fact president of the spiritualists association so a nice nod to the author, if somewhat weird.

I look forward to the next installment and hope the music and imagery is similar. It gave a great feel to the movie.
