Ripley’s Believe It or Not (2011)

Ripley’s Believe It or Not tells the story of Robert Ripley, a newspaper cartoonist who travels the world looking for oddities and recounting his tales in his comic strips.

Finding many strange and wonderful creatures, Robert Ripley’s life becomes one adventure after another. As this is a Hollywood film, as Ripley travels the world, he grows to respect the freaks he finds. So it’s a tale not only of adventure, but also one of learning.

The Scoop

The film has gone through a number of directors, from Tim Burton and Michael Gondry to current director Chris Columbus. Jim Carrey has previously been attached to star, but it is unclear if he is still interested in the film. Production hasn’t started as of yet, and it may not for a while yet, since Columbus has been rumored to be directing the next Superman film. Perhaps if he doesn’t get that job he’ll end up making Ripley’s.

Who’s It For?

I’d bet on PG-13 at worst. Maybe even PG.

Movie Release Date

Who’s In It?

Possibly Jim Carrey.

Interesting Fact

Most people have chosen not to believe it. Huh.

Big Fish, Nim’s Island, Harry Potter

What’s Good About It?

If it was still being made by Tim Burton I’d be first in line. I don’t love all his films, but Big Fish was pretty good, and Ripley’s sounded like it was in the same vein. Columbus did direct the first two Harry Potter films, so he can make a blockbuster, but the story calls for a more innovative and creative director than he’s been. Gondry would have been cool, but he fell through too.

What’s Bad About It?

Too many questions at this point. I’m not even sure the film will get made, or if it will be made by Columbus. I don’t see Jim Carrey being in it anymore, but you never know.

Our Clever Prediction

I don’t think we’ll see this for quite a while, but I do think it’ll get made eventually. The premise holds too much promise to just give up on it.

  1. I hope that Jim Carrey sticks to this movie. I loved the Ripley’s Believe it or Not in Las Vegas, NV. Either way, I’d love to know the whole story… I read a book on the history of Mr. Ripley and blah!!!
