Penny Dreadful is a new Showtime horror show that takes various classic Gothic characters, and puts them in Victorian London. Sort of like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Throw in Eva Green in sexy period costume, and you’ve got a show going!
The show is being promoted as a psycho-sexual horror, with a star-studded cast, and some of the most famous characters from literary fiction. The title comes from macabre serial stories in late 19th century British weekly pulp publications which usually cost a penny, and were called penny dreadful/awful by the Victorian public.
The show is created by John Logan, who also serves as executive producer along with Sam Mendes. Both of them previously worked together in Skyfall.
Penny Dreadful Plot
Victor Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s monster, Dorian Gray, Count Dracula, many more iconic characters roam around in Victorian London, alienated from society by their nature, coming out only in the dark. The show will shed some light on their origins, and follow horror stories every week in the spirit of the pulp publications of good old days. Will the characters ever fight with each other, or join together to fight evi…err…good? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out!
Penny Dreadful Premiere
It’ll premiere in May 11, 2014.

Reasons to Watch
Eva Green! Monsters! British accents! Nudity! (Hopefully!)
The first season will have eight episodes, and the first two will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible). I hope some day Guillermo Del Toro directs an episode.
Reasons to Skip
I don’t see why anyone should not give this a chance. I guess if you think making the characters share the same show debases them, then the show might not be appealing to you.
Our Not-Dreadful Prediction
This will be a hit. If True Blood could be a hit, then I don’t see Eva Green + Classic Monsters failing. No way, bro.
