Firstly, here’s a little note to Jim Carrey ; Nobody wants to see you in a serious role, we don’t care. We made you rich because you made us laugh, not so we could explore your artistic merits, and you could play with our emotions in a dramatic role. It just doesn’t work, it will never work, it hasn’t worked.
The Rant
Before getting into this gigantic flop of a movie, lets do the math on Jim’s successful films : Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, The Mask, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty , Me Myself and Irene … you get the point.
Boring? Jimbo finds a book about the mad writings of an obscure author and his obsession with the number 23, and a meaningless murder. Not surprisingly, it takes over his life.
The good
It wasn’t Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, slight nudity helped pass the time.
The bad
Boring, dull characters and no attachment to anything you are watching.
The movie has little suspense, and the cut scenes are incredibly corny. The intent to make Carrey look sadistic was a failure, and the sexual moments were laughable.
On a final note, I’m supposed to believe that Virginia Madsen (Carrey’s onscreen wife) falls for a guy on his way out from the mental hospital?
Memorable scene
Jim Carrey’s character with a “tough guy” tattoo running down his back. Honorable mention? Jimbo doing the nasty with a topless Logan Lerman.
I won’t ruin the ending, I’ll be surprised if many make it that far. I’m so done with Jim Carrey and his “Brutal” roles, I refuse to watch another film with this direction.
The Verdict
The Number 23 was one of the worst films of 2007, and of Jim Carrey’s career. Nothing to see here, move along.

Jim Carrey was disappointing in this role. He’s just not believable as a psychotic, saxaphone playing, killer.

Someone needs to remind Carrey he is a comedian.

Well I can’t say that I did not like this one, but it was very, very strange movie. Jim Carey playing a serious role just is not his thing! How can you take such a crazy comedian serious???
