After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang led by a prison escapee unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging the parents of one of the victims — a mother and father who devise an increasingly gruesome series of revenge tactics.
The Truth
The Last House on the Left is a remake of the 1972 classic, and really delivered a lot of drama and thrills, with quite a bit of disturbing events.
I thought the entire cast was wonderful, especially Garret Dillahunt, Monica Potter (hottest cougar of the year in my mind) and Tony Goldwyn. I loved finally seeing Goldwyn as a hero, rather than a heel as he is often cast as.
Special kudos to the lovely Sara Paxton, who’s performance was almost too real and creepy. How on earth she pulled off the incredibly disturbing rape scene is beyond me, I felt sick to my stomach watching it.
The movie is a wicked remake and was way above my expectations. I loved how dark they made the film, how evil the main characters were portrayed and the incredible loss of innocense we had to watch the girls go through.
The Action
The Action starts half way through the film, after the SUV is forced off the road by Emma’s actions with a cigarette lighter. From there on in, its intense and… at times… disturbing. The end of the film features a lot of gross moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
What’s good about it?
Sara Paxton and Martha MacIsaac play the two teen girls perfectly, and I loved the action and intensity the film delivered. The casting for the movie was perfect, the characters were wonderful and it moved along at a solid pace.
What’s bad about it?
I could of done with a little less of the rape scene, it really creeped me out. The film didn’t really need the final killing scene with the microwave, it didn’t fit into the film all the much, or with John Collingwood’s character. I’m actually not sure why they added that in, it would have been better without.
You’ll Like It If
If you are looking for an entertaining movie that may frighten, or yank all your emotions, this movie is for you.
What I learned
Never go into an old Motel to buy weed. You can fix a collapsed lung with a Windex straw, a knife and a glass of water.
The Verdict
The Last House On The Left was a fantastic remake, one of the better films of 2009.
