So I was late watching the Sherlock Holmes DVD that was sent to me, but I do have a fair amount of verbal assault to lay on this movie. I cannot fathom how Guy Ritchie can take such a wonderful character such as Sherlock Holmes, a talented cast and make a mockery of this legendary character.
Wait, what? You mean you enjoyed this completely unoriginal rip of Indiana Jones? Read on as I completely rip this new Sherlock Holmes movie apart.
The Truth
As I stated above, the film is a complete rip of Indiana Jones. The characters are the same, but it takes it to a different level on the ridiculous scale. So wait, now Sherlock Holmes is a warrior with his fists, as is Watson? Oh right, when you completely rip off Indiana Jones, I guess this is the way it has to be.
I counted at least 40 minutes of needless fight scenes, which could have made the Sherlock Holmes movie a respectable 1hr 20 minutes, instead of it’s 2 hr run-time. How many times are we going to have to watch this skinny little man Holmes, fight men twice his size? Why are we being forced to watch this over and over again?
How about the boring interaction between Rachel McAdams and Robert Downey Jr.? I counted 20 minutes of emotionless stories between the two of them, that left me praying for a quick end to this film.
So what were we really left with when you take away the laughable fight scenes, and the forced love interests? A really dull movie, with a plot so weak they had to sugarcoat it with the gutless action scenes and gravity defying moments. (Note to Guy Ritchie : 350lb men don’t fly 20 feet across a room when being zapped with a primitive cattle prod. )
You see, I don’t expect things to be perfect, but trying to reinvent Sherlock Holmes just seems inexcusable at this point. He wasn’t a ninja, a master with all the weapons… he wasn’t known to be loudmouth drunk… you know.. he was never supposed to be Indiana Jones. So why are we being force-fed this character rip?
And none of my complaints have even touched on Jude Law’s character, Dr. John Watson. Apparently he is also part Ninja, part Samurai… for fuck sakes..why?
The Laughs
I think we were supposed to laugh when Sherlock Holmes makes his cattle prod, and zaps his assailant across the room a couple times.
Why should I watch it?
You are a sucker for unoriginal plots and characters.
What’s Good About It?
The set and costumes were wonderful.
What’s bad about it?
The character’s dialogue is often hard to understand, with such fake accents being performed. The fighting scenes are ridiculous, and there is far too much unnecessary
What I learned
If you have a shit story and writers, just throw in a bunch of fight scenes.. oh wait.. that’s almost every Guy Ritchie movie.
The Verdict
Sherlock Holmes stunk. The plot was weak, the fight scenes were needless and outrageous. Put some meat on Robert Downey Jr. if you want me to believe he is the toughest guy in London.
A disappointing movie from start to finish, I’m glad I never paid to see this at the movie.
