King of California is a movie that flew under the radar last year, while irritating promotions for Die Hard 4 were thrown at your every 5 minutes. Do I sound bitter? Perhaps I am, because while wonderful movies like this are getting buried at the box office, piles of garbage are raking in fistfull’s of money …
A fresh-out-of-the-mental institution father {Michael Douglas} and his emancipated teenage daughter {Evan Rachel Wood }venture together on a quest for an ancient Spanish treasure buried beneath their local Costco in this take on the modern family and the American dream.
The Laughter
Michael Douglas’s character “Charlie” is a mentally unstable father of a strong teenage, independant daughter. His infatuation with the buried treasure is humorous and enjoyable. Charlie is a loveable guy who, despite his character flaws, only ever wanted the best for his daughter.
King of California has quite a few funny moments, evern though the movie is tagged as a Drama/Comdedy. The quest for gold in Costco was my favorite part of the movie and comes with a surprise twist near the end.
The Verdict
Rent this movie! King of California is a very entertaining movie, which never got the credit it deserved. In my opinion, this is Michael Douglas’s best performance since A Perfect Murder.
