How To Train Your Dragon was our family movie choice yesterday, and the animation certainly had a good vibe about before we even entered the Theater. A packed ticket counter, masses of children and families, all pumped to view this 3-D adventure from DreamWorks.
The Truth
The film is about a hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely owner of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.
There’s an underlying story here that was important, and not one that hasn’t been touched on before. Perhaps when told over and over again, the next generation will take it more to heart than us current mothers and fathers. A message of questioning what you’ve been told, and being a leader, rather than a follower, is an important one, and How To Train Your Dragon relays this well.
How To Train Your Dragon was a family film, that understood the importance of keeping the flow going. Not once were my 5yr olds board, it had their attention till the end. The energy was virbrant in the Theater, and everyone was thrilled with the 3D the film threw at us.
Would the movie be as good if it were not presented in 3D? Probably not, because I felt really immersed in the story because of the added effect.
The Action
How To Train Your Dragon is riddled with action and adventure!
The Laughs
Lots of laughs for the young kids, and the adults. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they combined the humor for all of the audience. Considering I felt Shrek 3 was far too dark for younger kids, How To Train Your Dragon was quite appropriate for ages 5 and up.
The 3-D
Incredible, this is the future of Animation. I can’t imagine how dull any upcoming animation will be after viewing How To Train Your Dragon. Now I understand why Toy Story will also be in 3-D.
Why should I watch it?
The underlying message is important, and the visual effects are incredible.
What’s bad about it?
Nothing.
You’ll Like It If
You’ll like How To Train Your Dragon no matter what.
What I learned
The spirit of adventure is reborn thanks to 3-D innovation in the last 3 years.
The Verdict
How To Train Your Dragon was the best family film I have seen in years, and the best visual effects since Avatar. The kids loved it, the wife loved it.. and the entire theater got their money’s worth. Well Done, don’t miss it! However, be warned… there are a few scenes I felt not appropriate for 7 and under.
