Defiance Movie Review

Its not that Defiance was a bad movie, its just that it wasn’t a story very well told. I enjoy war movies, they are my second favorite movie niche after the zombies, but Defiance had so many glaring holes it failed to strike many emotions in me.

The Truth

I hate Daniel Craig, because he runied the James Bond character for me, however I put that all aside before watching Defiance, in the hopes to just give the dorky looking Brit a second chance at redemption.

Three Jewish brothers escape from Nazi-occupied Poland into the Belarussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and others in danger. Hollywood took quite a few liberties with history in the film, but thats ok I suppose. In reality, the resistance mostly fled the german troops, and why not?

The directors made this part of history into a Jewish version of Braveheart. You can’t sugarcoat the atrocities of WW2, but they keep on trying, don’t they?

The entire movie is mostly about the struggle to stay alive in the woods, while taking in all the fleeing Jews in the surrounding area. Some little side plots enter the movie as characters fall in and out of love with the small community.

The Action

Lots of action in Defiance, one of the bright spots in the movie.

The Laughs

No laughter here, unless you are an Anti-Semite.

What’s good about it?

Some pretty decent action at times.

What’s bad about it?

Danile Craig took a great script, and brings it down.. way down.

You’ll Like It If

I’m not sure.

Reminds me of

Braveheart

The Verdict

Defiance takes you on a long and mildly entertaining movie that really didn’t impress me one way or the other. Its not worth the price of admission, but you may rent it without too many gripes.
