Monsters (2010)

Six years after alien was found in our solar system. The ship that was bringing a sample of the life back to earth by NASA crashes in Central America. This is the tale of the fallout of the crash.

After the probe crashed in Mexico, new forms of life started to pop up. Half the country was then put into quarantine as an infected area. Monsters tells the story of a journalist who takes a tourist through the infected area. It’s like District 9, only probably not as good.

No trailer, but there is this film clip:

The Scoop

Writer/director Gareth Edwards made the film on a relatively small budget (look at all those big name actors!) but was still able to make the special effects look professional. The film is reportedly more of a romance with monsters in the world around the couple than a true monster film.

Who’s It For?

No word of rating yet, but probably R.

Movie Release Date

October 29, 2010

Who’s In It?

Whitney Able … Samantha Wynden
Scoot McNairy … Andrew Kaulder

Interesting Fact

Director Gareth Edwards created all the special effects on his laptop. Check out the clip. How the heck did he do that? I can barely understand the wizardry that makes naked ladies appear.

Skyline, District 9

What’s Good About It?

Smaller budgets don’t always equate to crap films. With the advancements in technology over the last few years, more and more filmmakers have access to quality special effects on a shoestring budget. The clip looks good. Hopefully the whole film is of the same quality.

What’s Bad About It?

There isn’t too much known right now. It did screen at SXSW, so you can find some reviews online, but I’m avoiding them for now. I want to see it for myself.

Our Clever Prediction

Low box office, but there is a chance. I’m pretty sure the film is getting a wide release in October, so it could take off and become the next Paranormal Activity. I’m recommending you see it. And if you’re a pretty lady, I suggest you see it with me.

Brian brings to the site 4 years of online journalism, and attitude. Brian has probably offended you in his movie previews, and for that he won't apologize. Ladies, Brian is in a committed relationship with a woman who, thankfully, doesn't read Starseeker. It is this reluctance to read his work that keeps their relationship going. God bless America.

  1. I was so looking forward to seeing this film, unfortunately I don’t think it’s going to have much of a chance to do well.
While the theatres are full of terrible movies that just won’t go away, something potentially interesting like this is playing one just one screen in the entire city of Toronto…worse it looks like it’s only playing in less than a dozen theatres in Canada.

It’s a shame that they don’t seem to even be giving the movie a chance and it’s being shoved into a few small single screens here and there.

  2. The movie is on right now tonight on HDNet Movies on dish channel 136 as pre-release it is very cool and I think will do well. It The effects are out standing and this movie will be great on the big screen, the back story is good a bit predictable in one spot but it small I feel. It should be as good as Skyline that is coming out as well but I think better due to the production values here show more than a High budget film. The cool factor is no over kill of the effects a good under story and very good pace of the over all story.

I would rate it at a 10 out of 10 for cool low budget films
