Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)

Martha Marcy May Marlene is the story of a young woman who goes to live with her sister after escaping from being in a cult. It’s based on my life.

It’s why I hate Canada. I feel that all of Canada is a cult. I escaped as a young woman, but now I’ve overcome my fears and become a grown man. That’s how it works, right?

Anyways, Martha is the young woman, and the cult was abusive, so she has lots of mental anguish to overcome. Sounds like fun. Martha is so indoctrinated in the cult that she has trouble associating with her past life, and living with her sister becomes dangerous for everyone involved.

The tag line should be “Bitches be crazy.”

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Written by pretentiously named T. Sean Durkin, Martha Marcy May Marlene did really well at Sundance and looks like it might be this year’s Winter’s Bone, which coincidentally also starred John Hawkes. Or is it a coincidence? Hmmm… Could be a conspiracy. Have I stumbled upon the plot to next year’s hit indie film? Also starring John Hawkes?

I have. I’ll accept my award under the name B. James Lordfancypants.

What’s Good About It?

The film actually looks really good. The trailer is dark, scary, tense, and shows tons of promise. I love a film, and especially a trailer, that makes you want to see a film but also has enough left unsaid that you don’t know where it’ll go, so the film ends up a bit of a surprise. It may just be a character piece, but it could also turn into a full blown horror film. I’m lovin’ it.

What’s Bad About It?

Pretentious director name. This likely means he is a pretentious director. Oh well.

Our Clever Prediction

I see some more award love coming Martha Marcy May Marlene’s way. Perhaps even an Academy Award nomination for an Olsen. Shocking, but then you realize it isn’t one of the Olsen twins, but rather their THIRD sister. Spooky.
