Johnny English Reborn (2011)

Johnny English Reborn is a sequel to 2003’s Johnny English, starring Mr. Bean himself, Rowan Atkinson.

Though the original wasn’t that big a hit stateside, it made a fair amount of moolah overseas. The film cost about $40 million to make, and only made $28 million in the US, but overseas it made $161 million. I like the original, especially Natalie Imbruglia, who I’ve had a crush on since I was about 13 and she had that video where she looked cute. What? I’m supposed to remember the name of every damn music video?

The Scoop

Johnny English Reborn is essentially a sequel in the same vein as many of the James Bond sequels, which makes sense since the character is a spoof of James Bond anyways. There’ll be a new girl (damn), Rosamund Pike (okay, she is pretty hot), and a new villain and dastardly plot for Mr. Bean to foil. The story begins with Johnny English off the grid honing his spy skills in a remote region of Asia. MI-7 must bring him in to help unravel a conspiracy that threatens the life of the Chinese Premiere.

What’s Good About It?

Rowan Atkinson is a funny guy, no doubt about it. Mr. Bean is hilarious, and it’s a very specific kind of funny. You don’t see a lot of guys like him these days. Not many guys can make facial expressions like him. I saw a standup comedy special where he didn’t say anything and he still told a story and had everyone laughing. It takes balls and talent. Both of which he has.

What’s Bad About It?

The biggest drawback for Johnny English Reborn is that Atkinson’s appeal is mostly overseas. Not only did the first film make WAY more overseas than in the US, but all of his films perform that way. Mr. Bean’s Vacation made $32 million in the US, but over $200 million worldwide, same thing with Bean and the original Johnny English. It doesn’t really matter, since the film seems almost guarenteed to make big money, it just probably won’t make much of a splash stateside.

Our Clever Prediction

I’m hoping the film does well in the states. I really like Mr. Bean, and I think if more people gave it a shot, it would really make them laugh.

  1. Not only are his (R. Atkinson’s) films complex comedies – satirical and social and funny all at once, but he is….such a charming guy, the actor I mean, Mr. Atkinson is really ‘good looking’, all man…..LOL? …Go ahead! Might be my attraction to the Capricornian type, their intrinsic melancholy under the stony, bony, patriarchal expression……………I love him, the actor and his character….

  2. I think Mr Bean is the best actor, classic comdy, different. I want to uy whole DVD but US doesn’t carry.
