Infamous (2011)

The next in a slew of upcoming video game film adaptations, Infamous is the story of Cole McGrath, a bike messenger who develops electrical powers after an explosion. The PS3 exclusive game was a big enough hit and had just a good enough concept to intrigue producer Avi Arad (Marvel comic adaptations) to come on board.

With Arad producing, Infamous definitely has potential. This is the same guy who produced, among others, Spider-Man 1-3, X-Men 1-3, Iron Man 1-2, Blade, The Incredible Hulk, and Ghost Rider. Wait… Ghost Rider? Crap. Never mind. Let’s just call him hit or miss. Let’s hope for a hit.

Infamous Script

Screenwriter Sheldon Turner, whose last film was Oscar nominee Up in the Air, pitched Infamous to the studios, which bodes well for the film. For a video game, Cole McGrath’s story wasn’t half bad. It floundered toward the end, but the visual style and nature of the abilities could make for a good film. The story should follow that of the original Infamous, although a sequel has been announced, so perhaps the film will include portions of the second game as well.

Who’s It For?

More than likely PG-13, but it’s possible the film could go R. One of the highlights of the game was the choice you could make to be good or evil, so maybe those same choices will affect the film version as well.

Movie Release Date

2011-2012

Who’s In It?

No casting yet.

Related Movies

The upcoming Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is also being produced by Avi Arad, and other video game adaptations like Hitman, Prince of Persia, and Lara Croft all bear similarities. The story line is very comic bookish, so it should relate well to the X-Men and Spider-Man films as well.

What’s Good About It?

Infamous was a really good game, and the characters and especially the city were well thought out. If the film draws on these resources and really sets the film in a unique but still lived-in type city, then it could be really awesome.

What’s Bad About It?

Hmmm. Video game adaptation. Well, they pretty much always suck. And let’s be honest, Cole McGrath looked like the biggest douche in the first game. So big a douche that his whole character design and voice has been changed for the second. Which style will they go with? Let’s hope for less douche, more awesome.

Our Clever Prediction

I’m giving it a chance, only because I really liked the game. The concept of deciding whether or not to be a hero or villain, and the progressive nature of the powers both provided for a good gaming experience, and I can see it translating well to film. But don’t get your hopes up too high, it is a video game adaptation.
