Hysteria (2012)

Hysteria is about the man who invented the first vibrator. He was a doctor trying to treat women being women, so he gave them orgasms. That’s how I treat alcoholism. Doesn’t work.

Dr. Granville is the real life man who invented the vibrator. He was a London-based physician, and there was a catch-all diagnosis for anytime a woman was acting funny: hysteria. It turns out they just needed a bit of release.

Dr. Granville was handsome and on the rise (hehe) as a doc in London, and as he made his way into the upper classes he started experimenting with various methods of treating women. I prefer the ol’ Two in the Pink, One in the Stink shocker approach, but each man has a right to his own methods.

He eventually came across Charlotte Dalrymple, a spirited young lass who challenged many of his notions, and may have inspired the crotch tickler.

Tanya Wexler is the director for Hysteria, while Stephen Dyer, Howard Gensler and Jonah Lisa Dyer are the writers. Wexler has a few films to her name, though nothing for about the last decade. She must be really good, like Terrance Malick, to be able to take so much time off.

Or she sucks and couldn’t get a film made for over 10 years. Probably that.
