Gotham (Fox): Batman, before he was Batman, along with James Gordon and Many More!

Gotham (FOX) TV Show Based on Batman Characters

Gotham (FOX) TV Show Based on Batman Characters

After Chris Nolan’s spectacular Batman series, it was only a matter of time before someone tried to mine the rich Batman universe for some sweet television ratings.

Gotham will air on Fox, and will explore the lives of many iconic DC characters. It’ll tell the origin stories of famous villains like Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman and Two-Face.

The show will follow mostly Gordon’s perspective, and we’ll get to see the early years of Bruce through his eyes. No prizes for noticing the similarities with Smallville here.

The show is created by Bruno Heller who’s also behind HBO’s Rome and CBS’s The Mentalist. That’s not a bad resume.

Here’s Fox president Kevin Reilly making a few things clear (via TVLine):

This is all of the classic Batman characters, with a young Bruce Wayne, the Penguin, the Riddler [and] how they came to be…. What events led up to [someone] becoming Catwoman…. all with Gotham teetering on the edge. This is not some adjunct companion series. This is the Batman franchise, just backing it up [in chronology].

Reilly also said that they’ll track Bruce’s journey up to the point where he dons the cape, i.e. the point where it starts getting interesting.

Gotham (Fox) Plot

The series follows a young James Gordon, who’s freshly recruited as a Detective in the Gotham City Police Department. He’s partnered up with Harvey Bullock to investigate Gotham’s most high-profile case in years: the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. During the course of the investigation, Gordon meets a young, traumatized Bruce Wayne, and his loyal Butler Alfred Pennyworth.

Along the way Gordon confronts several bad guys, including a notorious gangster called Fish Mooney. Through the eyes of Gotham Police and Gordon we’ll get glimpses into the origins of various DC characters.

Reasons to Watch

Batman’s rogues gallery is arguably the best among all the famous superheroes. There are all kinds of interesting characters with a lot of depth that will translate really well to a TV show.

Reasons to Skip

I’m not a fan of the Smallville template here. Why not straight up make a Batman show? What about a Batman TV series on HBO? Now that’s something that would get me excited. This looks like another procedural with a bit of comic-book elements thrown on top of it. I don’t think they’ll adapt the surrealism and darkness abundant in the source material. This is Fox we’re speaking of.

Our Prediction

It’ll attract eyeballs, no doubt. It’s a safe bet to say that it’ll go for a couple of seasons based on the hype alone. If it goes beyond that depends on the quality.
