Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Roderick Rules is the sequel to this year’s smash (?) hit Diary of a Wimpy Kid, based on the acclaimed (?) series of novels by Jeff Kinney.
The second film in the series based around the life of middle school student Greg Heffley follows him as he navigates the hazards of school, avoids the talent show, impress girls, and tries to hide an event that took place over the summer, which his older brother Roderick knows all about.
It appears at present that they will have David Bowers take over as director for Thor Freudenthal, who had a previous engagement speaking for the “People with really awesome names” club.
They have meetings all the time.
Anyways, screenwriter Jeff Judah will return to adapt Kinney’s second novel for the screen. It appears the studio really wants to get one of these out every year around the same time, as the first was made for about $20 million and grossed over $60 million. Plus, much like Harry Potter and Twilight, the actors playing the parts will quickly get too old, and recasting the film could hurt the audience.
Who’s It For?
The last one was PG, so this probably will be also.
Movie Release Date
They’re aiming for March 25, 2011.
Who’s In It?
Most of the cast is expected to return, so…
Steve Zahn … Frank Heffley
Rachael Harris … Susan Heffley
Zachary Gordon … Greg Heffley
Devon Bostick … Rodrick Heffley
Robert Capron … Rowley Jefferson
Peyton List … Holly Hills
Jeff Kinney’s website, which is where he launched the Diary series, has had over 20 million unique viewers since it launched in 2004. It continues to get about 70,000 a day.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Diary of Anne Frank (also has diary in the title, so it counts), The Sandlot
What’s Good About It?
I’ve heard some good things about the first film, and I’ve seen some of the comics, which are funny and generally true to life. For the other guys. Who were losers. Unlike me, who was awesome.
What’s Bad About It?
The studio is really aiming to churn these out. I see the quality of the writing and directing taking a nosedive with the second film. They haven’t even shot anything yet, and they plan to release it in March. It’s enough time for this type of film, as there isn’t a need for special effects or a long post production, but it’s still pretty quick if you ask me.
Which you did. It’s why you’re reading this.
Our Clever Prediction
I see a smaller box office for the second Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but if enough people liked the first one, then there could still be a big enough market to make this worthwhile.
