Coriolanus (2011)

Coriolanus is an adaptation of the play by William Shakespeare, about a hero of Rome who is banished, only to return to take his revenge.

I don’t want to give away everything, and if you want to know it’s probably better to read the play, but the film is a modern version of the play, but it’s still set in Rome and looks sorta badass. Coriolanus is a great Roman hero, and he rises to the highest levels of power, though he isn’t exactly a charming man. He’s actually sorta a jerk, and he’s unwavering in his belief in his own abilities.

Though Coriolanus is a fantastic soldier, he is outmaneuvered politically by the crafty Romans, and even his own mother. Banished from Rome, Coriolanus joins forces with his greatest enemy and they march on Rome…

Coriolanus is the first film directed by star Ralph Fiennes. The play was adapted by John Logan, who has Gladiator, The Aviator, Rango and the currently filming James Bond to his credit.

Not bad.

What’s Good About It?

Shakespeare, Ralph Fiennes, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave… oh yeah, this should be good.

What’s Bad About It?

Coriolanus is Fiennes’s first film as a director, maybe he isn’t as good a director as he is an actor.

Our Clever Prediction

I see some potential Oscar nominations, and the action looks pretty cool, so Coriolanus might be a sleeper hit.
