Conan (2011)

Details of a new Conan movie are emerging as filming is set to begin any day now. What is surprising, is who has committed to this new Conan movie and the movie’s lack of leading male talent for the role of Conan.

Conan (2011)

The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria. Mickey Rourke stars as Corin, (Rourke is out, Ron Perlman is in as Corin now) and Jason Momoa as Conan. It was just announced that Bob Sapp will play Ukafa in director Marcus Nispel’s Conan..

Apparently, Ukafa is the main character that battles Conan, and is quite the warrior.

The new Conan is played by Jason Momoa, a virtually unkown actor. He has been in a bunch of Baywatch episodes and is best known as Ronon Dex in the Stargate Atlantis series. An odd selection for Conan? Yeah, a little bit.

Why you care

Those of us approaching 40 remember the Conan movie as Arnold’s breakout role. I was excited at the idea of a Conan remake, at first, but now I am concerned. Jason Momoa does nothing for me as Conan, I don’t like the choice at all. Why isn’t ‘The Rock, or someone with a bigger name the lead Conan character? I don’t get it. This sucks.

Release Date

Release Date: August 19, 2011 – This has been confirmed as the final release date for Conan.

Jason Momoa, and Leo Howard. Update : Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan and Rachel Nichols are now in the movie, so is Bob Sapp. (MMA Fans know who Sapp is). Again, Rourke is out, Perlman is in.

Reminds me of

Conan the Barbarian (1982)

Interesting Fact

Jared Padalecki almost landed the role of Conan.

The Good

The relaunching of a great movie franchise.

The Bad

Ugh. Another remake with a less than stellar cast. I’m not looking forward to this new Conan movie. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong once the early images come out.

Our Clever Prediction

Undecided, but unless a bigger name joins the cast… I think the new Conan movie is going to blow, or be as clever as The Scorpion King – Rise of a warrior, which went straight to video.

  1. I’ve been reading Conan since 1970… got the books, got the comics, got the magazines…read everything Howard ever wrote about him, and the watered down versions by De Camp, Carter, Nyborg, etc, etc…
I read the movie synopsis, and again, none of the film writers ever read a Conan novel, I’m sure of it. If you are going to make a Conan movie, adapt a story, don’t try and make up some garbage as you go along. Queen of the Black Coast – perfect. You could easily make that into a 2 hour film… I’ll go see the movie regardless, but I hope I’m not disappointed.
