And thats all the DVD’s that are arriving in 2011!

In fact, it makes me want to curl up in a ball and pull the covers over my head. To say that there are few gems coming out would be an understatement.

On the other hand, we’ve got DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. Rudd is invited to a dinner party in which he has to bring a total loser — enter Steve Carell. There’s always MACHETE — a beautifully violent grindhouse of a movie that will have your jaw dropping in amazement at the level of violence that can be squeezed into one DVD.

When January 11th comes around, PIRANHA in Blu-Ray 3D comes out. Yes, it’s an over-the-top fish fry of a movie, but it’s definitely campy and fun. When it came out in theaters, a number of critics were astonished at how much fun the movie was. So, while you’re not going to have the experience of watching another JAWS, you can turn your brain off and just have a good time. And, if you need some kind of “art” fix, DANCES WITH WOLVES is out with a 20th Anniversary Edition. For me, a little Kevin Costner goes a long way, but if you’re a Kevin Costner fan, you’re sure to enjoy all the extras packed into this edition.

Outside of the complete first season of JUSTIFIED coming out, there isn’t much coming out the week of January 18th to make me excited. Actually, even JUSTIFIED isn’t doing that much for me, but it’ll be something to watch and I enjoy watching Timothy Oliphant portraying a lawman who has a very concrete vision of what is right and what is wrong. It’s a good thing that the DVD collection comes out this week since it might get enough attention to have people taking a look at what it’s all about.

Finally, the last week in January brings two DVDs that are worth looking at. First, you’ve got Bruce Willis in RED, which teams him up with a cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich playing covert operatives in their twilight years who still can kick some ass. But, if you’re not into guns, SECRETARIAT is released on January 25th, and this true story about one of the most amazing horses in racing history is both entertaining and fairly accurate to the historical truth.

So, there you have it. While 2011 might shape up to be a really great year for films, it’s definitely not exploding onto the scene in a noteworthy way.

Battle Royale DVD Re-release

Released in the UK on the 29th November 2010 by Arrow Films, there will only be 10,000 chances to get your hands on this controversial masterpiece on DVD and 10,000 on blu-ray restored to 1080dp. Both versions are newly translated and come with an unbelievable mass of extras. Typing them out feels like a lot of effort so click here to see the full list.

In case you’ve never heard of this movie (for shame) watch the theatrical trailer for the original 2000 release directed by Kinji Fukasaku below.

At the dawn of the millennium, the nation collapsed. At 15% unemployment, 10 million were out of work. 800,000 students boycotted the schools. The adults lost confidence and, fearing the youth, eventually passed the Millennium Educational Reform Act, AKA the BR Act… So begins Battle Royale.

In a move to assert authority the Japanese government makes an example of a ninth grade class by taking them to an isolated island, supplying a kit bag each with random weapons and issuing instructions; ‘today’s lesson is, you kill each other off till there’s only one left. Nothing is against the rules.’ Well, spare the rod spoil the child…

Ultra-violent, Battle Royale was blamed by for a youth crime wave in Japan, as well as the notorious Sasebo slashing murder. As rumours go it had something to do with the Virginia Tech massacre too. And the assassination of JFK. And the sinking of the Titanic.

Battle Royale is a must for anyone whose DVD collection has to be hidden from under 12′s and with three discs of shock-horror for the price of one I’m pretty sure it makes financial sense. Maybe I’ll add it to my wish list for Santa.

Yes, this is a big month for DVD releases, December is awesome and has movies for every type of taste. I can’t believe how many movies are hitting the DVD market this month, check it out.

* The Disappearance of Alice Creed – If you need a movie about kidnapping, abuse and creepy men this November, I guess this is for you.
* The Expendables – Nothing here but explosions and face punching by legends of this genre.

November 30th

* Cairo Time – Will appeal to your sensitive side.
* Going the Distance – Something I can rarely do.
* Knight and Day – Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz unite for this terrible action/adventure
* The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Nic Cage tries to get his career going again with this November DVD.
* Vampires Suck – Here’s a tip, this movie sucks, don’t bother renting it.

New dvd releases for October include The Karate Kid (Oct 5th) , A Nightmare On Elm Street (also Oct 5th) , Jonah Hex (October 12th) and How to Train Your Dragon on (October 15th.)

Here’s the full October release schedule, so if you are looking forward to renting a movie this Oct, plan ahead here. Needless to say there isn’t a lot of releases in October that get us excited, and the lack of horror films to rent for Halloween is dismal.

Clash of the Titans : Sam Worthing and Liam Neeson lead the remake of this legendary Fantasy. This DVD will be hot!

The Losers : Zoe Saldan and Chris Evans lead a black ops team into a rather dull adventure, in this box office flop.

Chloe : In the movie ‘Chloe’ Amanda Seyfried is hired to seduce Liam Neeson, and she does it a little too well for Julianne Moore’s liking.

Kites : A fatally wounded man is left for dead in the heat of the desert sun. This film was a limited release, but reviews were really solid. Check out this DVD.

Greenberg : This Ben Stiller comedy is about a New Yorker, who moves to LA in order to figure out his life..
