Bourne 5 (2016)

The Bourne Legacy (2016)

The Bourne Redundancy: Part Deux

Despite a very poor box-office performance (with just $276 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million), The Bourne Legacy now has a sequel, for the moment called Untitled Jeremy Renner/Bourne Sequel. Or maybe it doesn’t. Let us explain that for a bit.

Back when Matt Damon was doing The Bourne Ultimatum, he said that doing another film based on the character would be redundant. The reason was simple enough: with Ultimatum came the answers to all of Bourne’s problems, thus ending in a most satisfying way his story.

Of course, Legacy didn’t feature the same character. Instead, the studio, riding on the success of the trilogy, decided to change the main character with another secret operative called Aaron Cross. Jeremy Renner can be said that did a good job, although he is still yet to prove himself as a worthy leading actor in an action movie.

Bourne Legacy received very mixed reviews, to say the least. It was obvious that it missed the star power of Matt Damon. And this is probably why the Untitled Jeremy Renner/Bourne Sequel was delayed so many times.

At first, back in 2012, after the release of Bourne Legacy, Universal Pictures announced that there will be an Untitled Jeremy Renner/Bourne Sequel, despite the poor performance of the last film. Furthermore, Matt Damon expressed his interest in returning to the franchise that established him as an action superstar.

In 2013, an official announcement said that Bourne 5 will hit the big screens sometime in 2015, with Justin Lin (Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6) announced to direct. Obviously, Jeremy Renner was also announced to return in the lead role. One year later, in 2014, another official statement announced that Matt Damon won’t return, not even in a cameo.

But the confusion wasn’t over, since a couple of months later, in 2014, Matt Damon was again confirmed to return. How does that work? We don’t know. But what we know is that the movie was delayed from August 2015 to the 14th of July 2016.

And this was just the first delay – at the beginning of 2015, the studio pushed back the release with a couple of weeks, on the 29th of July. What reasons were for this second delay? We don’t really know…

Bourne Release Date

So, is the Untitled Jeremy Renner/Bourne Sequel going to happen? Is Matt Damon going to return? Is the studio going to squeeze another couple of millions out of what seems to be a dead franchise? We have no idea.

Just like we have no idea as to what plot the movie will have. Sure enough, Bourne Legacy did have an opened ended finale, literally asking for a sequel. But still…

If the Untitled Jeremy Renner/Bourne Sequel will be released on the 29th of July 2016 (and we doubt it), there is no known contender for the first place at the box office (we’re still wondering how Justin Lin can pull it through, especially since Star Trek 3 will be released just a couple of weeks earlier).

Who’s In It?

At the moment, we know that Jeremy Renner will reprise his role as Aaron Cross. And that is about everything that can be said for certain about the actors involved in the movie. Justin Lin is still attached to direct – even if 2016 will also see the release of Star Trek 3, on the 8th of July (maybe this was the reason for the second delay, but we doubt it).

Universal Pictures may have a plan for a shared Bourne universe, with both Renner and Damon as leads. But, taking into account what we know about the Untitled Jeremy Renner/Bourne Sequel, this will happen in a very distant future. If it will happen at all.
