Bitter Pill (2013)

Bitter Pill, formerly known as The Side Effects, follows a young woman who turns to large amounts of prescription drugs to cope with anxiety.

Emily Hawkins (Rooney Mara) has a whole boatload of anxiety because of her husband’s upcoming release from prison. To cope, she takes pills.

The young woman starts to have an affair with a doctor to help supply her addiction to prescription meds.

And that’s all that’s known about the film for the moment.

Bitter Pill

Bitter Pill is being directed by enigmatic Steven Soderbergh, based on a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns. The film has a pretty good cast (see below), though star Blake Lively was recently replaced by newly Oscar nominated Rooney Mara in order to get funding for the film.

Bitter Pill Release Date

TBA 2013.

Who’s In It?

  Rooney Mara … Emily Hawkins
  Channing Tatum
  Jude Law
  Catherine Zeta-Jones

What’s Good About It?

Soderbergh is a talented director, and getting a cast with Rooney Mara, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones is always a big plus.

What’s Bad About It?

Channing Tatum. Ugh.

Our Clever Prediction

I don’t think Bitter Pill is going to be a big success. Soderbergh keeps making these odd films, and while they’re generally decent, they seem to be more of an experiment than actual real attempts at making films.

I liked Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but she needs to make a few more really good films before I believe in her ability to really be the star of a film.
