Aquaman (2018)

Aquaman – the Movie

Aquaman is the 6th film announced by Warner Bros and DC to arrive on the big screens until 2020. The announcement was made last year, in October, with Jason Momoa set to play the titular character.

However, this wasn’t the first time when Warner Bros attempted to make a movie about the King of the Seven Seas, with plans being revealed as early as 2003. Of course, seeing that Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy was much grounded, without the intrusion of superpowered characters, the plans were scrapped.

The first news about a film based on Aquaman arrived, after this first attempt, in 2013, after the release of Man of Steel. At that time, Geoff Johns (chief creative officer at DC Comics) announced that the studio sees this character as a priority.

Of course, this has puzzled the fans of superhero movies, since this character has always been the punchline of the superhero genre. The obvious question, for most, was how the studio will tackle with him, when he had such as derided superpower (talking to fish).

It was later revealed that, instead of focusing on this superpower, the character played by Jason Momoa will instead be on par with Wonder Woman, being very strong and very resistant (due to the depths in which he lives), while also wielding magical weapons (and thus posing a threat to even Superman).

Of course, Jason Momoa denied playing the character on every occasion he had – of course, for most of the superhero genre fans, it was more than obvious that he already signed to portray Arthur Curry (Aquaman’s alter-ego).

But everybody was still surprised when the reveal was made. Jason Momoa simply posted a pic with him, holding an Aquaman comic book issue. And that was the barbarian King of the Seven Seas, physically imposing and missing an arm (in a way hinting that the character will be based on Peter David issues from 1990).

Aquaman the barbarian with a harpoon replacing his hand – well, it was more than obvious, from that moment, that this version of the character was not one to be trifled with.

And an even bigger surprise, which has divided the fans in two, was when the first pic of Jason Momoa as Aquaman was revealed. Sure enough, this Aquaman has distanced himself from the comic book origins very much, from the color of the hair to his armor (which is rather inexistent). But still, there were some hints in that unique pic which actually hinted at the thought and time put into this new design (the trident, the belt, the insignia, the tattoos, the symbols, as well as others).

And that was all about Aquaman – afterwards, nothing more has appeared about him or about his solo movie. What we know, however, are a couple of rumors concerning his appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. According to one of these rumors, and the most credible one, he will have just a simple cameo. Thus, we will see only his hand – locked in a cell by Lex Luthor, Aquaman’s hand banging the walls will be seen by Batman on a surveillance video.

So the fans of Jason Momoa and of the character himself will have to wait for a while until the Atlantean King will be seen in action. And that will happen one year before his solo movie, when The Justice League Part One arrives, in 2017.

As far as the Aquaman movie is concerned, it was announced on April 2015 that James Wan (Insidious and Furious 7) will helm the movie. As far as the screenplay is concerned, Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire) is in charge.

For the moment, nothing is known about the plot. But seeing that the movie will arrive after The Justice League Part One, it can be expected that the solo movie of Aquaman won’t be an origin story (which is actually a good thing, since everybody is doing them).

Aquaman Release Date

If no further delays will occur (delays due to the announcement of some rumored DC movies), Aquaman is scheduled for release on the 27th of July 2018. Jason Momoa will portray the lead character.
