Superman V Batman: Dawn of Justice (2015)

Superman V Batman: Dawn of Justice , a movie so destined for failure, we have no idea what to expect. Failure? Let just take a step back, and remember the last time 2 of the worlds biggest superhero’s were together on the big screen and it worked out happily for everyone. (The avengers doesn’t count, as the Hulk and Iron Man are nothing compared to Superman and Batman in popularity).  Oh right, never. Plust, you throw in Ben Affleck and a awful Henry Cavill, and I’m not all the excited. But hey, I’ve been burned before, maybe this time will be different.

Yes, folks, the moment you had all been waiting for is finally here. The two greatest superheroes of all time are going to appear on the big screen, together. Probably teaming up to take down a greater foe, but maybe not. Maybe they’re squaring off, because we all know Superman vs Batman is an even match. If the movie does well, then we might get to see a Justice League movie sometime in the later half of this decade, which will try its best to not look like a cash grab inspired by The Avengers.

Superman V Batman

After years of trying to get a Justice League movie going, Warner Bros. finally gathered some balls and announced a Batman/Superman movie at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con. They announced the film by referencing lines from this comic:

The film will effectively be a sequel to Man of Steel, and they announced it by reading lines from a comic where Superman gets his ass kicked. Brilliant. We got a Superman movie after decades (Superman Returns), only to be rebooted after a few years, which itself was turned into a crossover in the next installment where the other guy will likely steal the limelight. I’m sure Superman fans must be ecstatic at the moment.

Snyder and Goyer will be returning as the creative heads, with Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas reportedly serving as executive producers this time. On using The Dark Knight Returns as the inspiration, Snyder said that the film won’t be based on that novel, but rather take its thematic cues from it, i.e. Superman will get owned by Batman.

The comics have enough material for them to mine from. In the DC animated universe, Superman and Batman teamed up to take down Lex Luthor and the Joker. I don’t think they’ll go with something so simple and kid-friendly. What do you think this is, a comic-book movie? Here’s my prediction:

Superman shows up at Gotham.

Batman says, “Stay off my territory”.

They fight.

They kiss. They make up.

A bigger threat emerges. They team up and punch out the REAL villain.

Release Date

UPDATE: The release date has been shifted to May 6, 2016.

Who’s In It?

Henry Cavill as Mass Murderer of Steel.
Amy Adams as Lois Plot Device.
Laurence Fishburne as Perry Black.
Not Christian Bale , but Ben Affleck…as THE GODDAMNED BATMAN. Bale has said that he won’t be returning as the Caped Crusader.

We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy. Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.

Who better to play Batman than that one guy who’s better at directing than at acting, and played a cheap Batman knockoff in one of the worst superhero movies of all time. Hey, while we’re at this, why not have Halle Berry and Arnold Schwarzenegger return to their respective roles as Mr Freeze and Catwoman?

Gal Gadot is going to play Wonder Woman, apparently. Yes, the film will have Wonder Woman too! Because what better way to introduce the most iconic female superhero, than as a supporting character in a movie about two dudes fighting. Stay classy, Hollywood. You might remember Gadot from the Fast & Furious franchise, where she played Gisele. I’m not sure about her as Diana. I mean, they could’ve just cast Gina Carano, or Carla Gugino. I’m not sure if Gadot has great acting ability, she definitely is not how I’ve always pictured the character in my mind. Anyway, let’s see how it goes.

Jesse Eisenberg will be playing Lex Luthor. Make sure you don’t share too much of your personal information on facebook, Superman!

Jeremy Irons will play Alfred. I would’ve preferred him in a negative role but I guess I’ve seen The Lion King too many times.

Here’s how they announced it at Cermi Cern:

The Good Stuff

No matter how unique a snowflake you think you are, it’s hard not to have your inner child be a little excited over the prospect of these two great heroes facing off.

The Bad Stuff

Zack Snyer. David Goyer. Henry Cavill.

(UPDATE: The studio has hired Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio to rewrite the script.)

Okay, let’s be honest here. Unlike Marvel, they didn’t announce this project out of enthusiasm. The reason Batman is joining his pal Clark is because the studios believe Superman alone doesn’t have the superpower of earning a billion dollars at the box office. Man of Steel has grossed less that last year’s The Lazily Rehashed Spider-Man. Before 2008, Iron Man was a little known third-tier Marvel superhero. Today he is earning more money than Superman. That just tells you how utterly DC has failed to utilize their properties, and how brilliantly Marvel has managed theirs.

Anyway, the studio wants the sweet nerd money, and Superman vs Batman seems the logical way to go. The Justice League movie? No one cares about the other members of the Justice League. Why risk with a superhero ensemble when you can make as much money with a superhero face off?

The only problem is, Snyder is not nearly as smart or cool as he thinks he is. He makes dumb action movies and waxes a superficial layer of self-importance to make his films seem smarter than they actually are. Man of Steel had atrocious dialogue and character work. I’m sure this movie will have some epic battle scenes, but I’m afraid Snyder will manage to undo all the good work Nolan did with our favorite masked vigilante.
