Treasure Island is a new film based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson book about a young man who sets out on the high seas to find buried treasure and fights against pirates.
Treasure Island is clearly a very famous novel, with hotels named after it and previous films made around the story. Jim Hawkins is the main character, and he’s a young boy who hears from an in-hiding pirate about a buried treasure. The story has pretty much all of the classic pirate cliches, from a map with buried treasure and an “X” marking the spot to sword fights and more. It’s largely responsible for much of what we see in pirate movies.

Guy Ritchie has been entrusted with the director’s chair for Treasure Island. The film is still in the very early stages of development, but with the success of the Sherlock Holmes films it appears Ritchie is a go-to guy (hahahaha.. get it?) for these types of re-imaginings.

What’s Good About It?
Treasure Island is a classic for a reason, and Guy Ritchie did some cool stuff with the Sherlock Holmes films.
What’s Bad About It?
I worry people might be burnt out on pirate movies, which in my opinion took all the cool stuff from Treasure Island and added in Captain Jack Sparrow.
Our Clever Prediction
I think Treasure Island will do some decent business, but I can’t say how well it’ll do until I see more of the casting, budget and probably a trailer. Still, it’s being designed as a tent pole, so we’ll just have to see.
