Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is a remake of a 2005 film called Lady Vengeance, and it was about a woman who was falsely imprisoned for 13 years, only to finally be released and begin extracting her revenge, which she has been planning the whole time.
The original film was made by Chan-wook Park, so if this sounds like a female version of his classic film Oldboy (for which is there is another English remake in production right now) then that’s no coincidence.
The main character in the original film was imprisoned for kidnapping and killing a young boy, and she goes out for revenge against the actual killer, and English teacher.
Probably a Canadian ex-patriot.
There’s no director for Sympathy for Lady Vengeance just yet, but William Monahan, who wrote Body of Lies, the English version of The Departed and Kingdom of Heaven, is writing the screenplay. Not bad.
Charlize Theron… Lady Vengeance?
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance sounds like a good premise, just like Oldboy, which, to be fair, was also based on a fucking awesome movie. The original Lady Vengeance might not be the same level of film, but Chan-wook Park is an awesome director, so there’s likely some cool stuff for this remake to draw upon.
There isn’t much known about Sympathy for Lady Vengeance just yet to say if the remake will be any good.
I can’t quite say if Sympathy for Lady Vengeance will be a commercial success or not. Theron is starting to lose some of her sheen in my opinion, and while she’s still hotter than the sun and a talented actress, she might not be able to lead an action film in another couple years.
