Seventh Son (2014)

Seventh Son is an adaptation of a successful fantasy book series, about a knight who fights supernatural evils and must train an apprentice to help him in his quest to save the world.

The story is set in the 18th century and revolves primarily around Master Gregory, played by Jeff Bridges. Many folks in the town think of him as an old spook, but in reality he’s fighting witches and dragons to keep the people safe. A witch he’d imprisoned many years before suddenly escapes, and Master Gregory must train a new apprentice in just a month. This task would normally take many years. Will his new apprentice (Ben Barnes), a “seventh son of a seventh son” be ready in time to save the world?

You bet your ass he will.

Seventh Son

Seventh Son comes from up and coming director Sergey Bodrov, who has made a fair number of badass action films set in the past, like Nomad. He even made a film about the rise of Genghis Kahn.

The films are based on the books by Joseph Delaney.

What’s Good About It?

The cast for Seventh Son is outstanding. Ben Barnes should do a good job as the new apprentice and likely hero of the film, while Jeff Bridges is gonna rock in a very serious way as Master Gregory. Julianne Moore is playing the evil witch, so the baddie should be entertaining as well.

What’s Bad About It?

I worry that Seventh Son is coming out in mid-January. That’s not exactly prime time for a big action set-piece.

Our Clever Prediction

I’m going to keep my fingers crossed for Seventh Son. The trailer looks entertaining, and the concept, while basic, looks good enough. I’m a little worried about Jeff Bridges. He’s always great in his roles, but he also made R.I.P.D. And that looks like a turd.
