The Stand (2013)

Dudley 'Booger' Dawson February 3, 2011 9

The Stand is a famous Stephen King novel that has been made into a TV series, but will now be made into a major motion picture in 2013. This future movie looks to take the darker approach that King took in the novel.

The Stand

The plot is rather awesome, and follows the Stephen King novel. It deals with a post-apocalyptic world. The interesting thing is, the book is divided into three parts, so right away we have to wonder why the movie isn’t going to do the same? There is almost too much information to squeeze into one movie.

Anyways, the plot is based around the decaying world after the release of biological weapons, including the Flu. Society is being torn apart by violence, martial law fails.. and a few survivors manage to come together to survive the new world.

You can probably already tell how many writers have copied King’s original story, as The Stand is essentially the plot for many successful ‘last man standing’ movies the last thirty years.

I’m summarizing here, but you get the general idea for the plot of The Stand.

The Stand Release Date

Looks like a summer 2013 release date.

Who’s In It?

Casting has just started

What’s Good About It?

A great story, by one of the greatest literary minds to ever have existed.

What’s Bad About It?

The Stand should be three movies, not one.

Our Clever Prediction

Steven King novels have a mixed rate of success when translated to the big screen, but we have to believe The Stand will be awesome, like the novel.

I they stick in a zombie sub-plot, I’ll be furious! Rotting and putrifying bodies is enough of a gore treat for hard-core fans.

I’m very interested in this new version, as the TV series had a lot of flaws along with its virtues. My thoughts:

    1. It looks like it will be a multi-picture deal. In July, word got out about at least THREE films, so yay.

    2. As long as King is NOT involved in the adaptation, it has a chance of being very good. While a wonderful author, he is not good at screenwriting. Not good at ALL. He doesn’t understand the demands of film and his taste in movies hews to the B-grade sort. He’s also too attached to his plots and tends to over-emphasize the wrong things. Get a good screenwriter to work on it and it should be great.

    3. Let’s hope it’s not gunked up with a lot of CGI foolishness and that awful 3D process. The story is fantastic enough as it was conceived; there’s no reason to tart it up.

I am super stoked for this to happen just to see what kind of decisions the directors take. The possibility of it crashing and burning exists, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be exited. Even if the movie doesn’t do the book a bit of justice, if they do a good job telling the story then I am going to be satisfied. 3 part is naturally ideal.

King said he had no idea this was in production until he read it on the internet. He also said he has no hopes of it actually doing his novel justice as one film. He said it had hope if they made it a trilogy and i 100% agree.

For starters, the stand has about 50 trillion characters that are ALL an essential part of the plot. I was initially excited about the news, because The Stand is my favorite book of all time. But now I’m just not too thrilled. To cram a three piece (or four piece depending on the version you read) book into a two hour movie will be horribly done from the get go. Too much will be lost and it will feel too much like we are watching a synopsis of the entire story. It will feel rushed, and empty.
