Stoker (2013)

Stoker is the first English language film from incredible Korean director Chan-wook Park, who made the insane Old Boy. The film is about a young girl whose father just died, and her uncle comes to live with her and her mother. The uncle appears to be a good man, but there’s a darkness underneath his calm exterior, a darkness that may corrupt the girl.

The girl is India Stoker, and her Uncle Charlie is a total mystery to her until after her father dies. It appears Uncle Charlie is banging her mom, and her mom is one mean bitch. But Uncle Charlie may have plans for India, and not her mother. India has a dark side, one that Uncle Charlie hopes to exploit. He’s a violent man, and she’s a violent girl. I’m not sure if he’s going to teach her to be an assassin or a serial killer, but either seems likely at this point. Expect a few twists and turns.

Stoker

Like I said, Stoker comes from Old Boy director Chan-wook Park, which is a very good thing, except that this is his English language debut. I’m not sure how well he’ll be able to director English language actors. This could be his downfall. Nonetheless, he’s a talented dude.

Another interesting part of Stoker is the writer is Wentworth Miller, who was the lead actor on the show Prison Break. That’s sorta weird, but maybe he’s more talented than I’d have thought. Maybe.

What’s Good About It?

Park is a frickin’ awesome director, and the cast is overall very good. The trailer and story look very interesting, and I hope that they won’t give away the twists. It’s just such a cool film. I’ve very excited.

What’s Bad About It?

Stoker may suffer from Park’s lack of English language directing experience. Wentworth Millar’s writing might also not be up to snuff.

Our Clever Prediction

I expect insanely good things from Stoker. I can’t imagine it not being at least somewhat interesting. I think it’ll be quality.
