Iron Man 3 is the third film in the ongoing adventures of billionaire super hero Tony Stark’s life. The third film may follow the Extremis story from the comics. Very cool.
Plot details for Iron Man 3 are being held fairly close to the vest, though it’s likely the filmmakers are going to stay true to the technological side of Iron Man’s story, rather than delving into some of his supernatural villains, such as the Mandarin. This isn’t to say the Mandarin won’t make an appearance, as he’s one of Stark’s biggest, if not THE biggest villain in his rogue’s gallery to not make an appearance in an Iron Man film to date.
Note that in the first Iron Man film there was a passing reference to a group of ten rings or something like that, as if every terrorist group in the Middle East, or perhaps the world, is but one of the rings. This might be a way to tie in the Mandarin, as he would be someone in control of these ten rings, rather than the ten magical rings from the comics.
The story for Iron Man 3 is supposed to follow the Extremis storyline from the comics. This is a relatively recent story, and I believe it was one of comic greats Warren Ellis’s stories. Very cool indeed. The artwork was especially cool. The basics of the story is that a scientist experimented with bio electric engineering, and he figured out a way to make a techno virus that would turn anyone who is exposed into half a machine. They’d be stronger, faster and nearly invulnerable. Maybe even able to expel energy blasts right from their bodies. It was pretty badass.
In the comic, Tony Stark was exposed to the Extremis virus, and it caused him to bond with the Iron Man suit in a way like never before. It essentially made him and the suit a single thing. This made him far more effective as a fighter, and he was able to be a bigger badass than ever before. Cool beans.
Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3 will be directed by Shane Black, how previously directed star Robert Downey Jr. in the underrated Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Black is most famous for writing Lethal Weapon when he was very young. He’ll be cowriting Iron Man 3 with Drew Pearce, who has a fair bit of TV experience, but has suddenly landed a handful of big time writing roles, with both Iron Man 3 and Sherlock Holmes 3 entrusted to him. Interesting. Maybe he’s friends with Robert Downey Jr.

Who’s In It?
Robert Downey Jr. … Tony Stark/Iron Man
Guy Pearce … Aldrich Killian
Gwyneth Paltrow … Pepper Potts
Jessica Chastain … (rumored)
Ben Kingsley … The Mandarin (rumored)
Don Cheadle … Lt. Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes/War Machine
What’s Good About It?
In addition to the awesome cast of Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Jessica Chastain are said to be joining the film. Chastain would play Tony’s new secretary, and Pearce and Kingsley would play villains.
What’s Bad About It?
I’ve enjoyed both Iron Man films thus far, though I felt they lacked in the storytelling and villain department. Mickey Rourke and Jeff Bridges were both underutilized in the first two films, so hopefully Shane Black will do more with Pearce and Kingsley.
Our Clever Prediction
There’s essentially no chance Iron Man 3 won’t make mega bucks. The few hurtles it has to overcome are the new director and the possibility that after The Avengers and all the other Marvel films people are going to get tired of all the comic book movies. There may not be too many more of these films before a reboot is required. Hopefully Iron Man 3 will finish before a change is necessary.

Robert Downey Jr.’s daughter attended the same middle school as I did…perhaps Pearce is her godfather?
