Top Gun 2 (2016) – A new Top Gun Sequel?

The  Top Gun 2 Movie brought up a few memories when I heard the news of a sequel. You see, I loved Top Gun, I was a kid in the 80’s, so when someone says ‘I got the need, the need for Spped!’ I get it. I had a leather jacket with navay patches on it, sunglasses, and a Ninja street bike. I wore white t-shirts and Levis, and slicked my hair back. Top Gun had an effect on me, on all of us, except Beach Volleyball with 10 of your shirtless buddies, and jeans, will never be cool EVER. I understand they thought that awkward scene in the movie tried to fool us all, but it didn’t work.

So what is Top Gun 2 about? Details are still early for this new Top Gun Movie, we know that Tom Cruise is back but they are telling us his level of participation in Top Gun 2. Details are sketchy, but Paramount Pictures has made offers to producer Jerry Bruckheimer for a Top Gun Sequel. The death of Tony Scott isn’t going to stop this movie, by all accounts. Rumor has it Tom Cruise is just in the film as a cameo role, probably as the new ‘Viper’ to replace Tom Skerritt’s character. So obviously, ‘Maverick’ is in, and it would fucking rock of somehow ‘Iceman’ could comeback too. But now that Val Kilmer is too fat and outcast, to be considered in any manner for Top Gun 2, forget it.

As of October 2014, the plot has changed… and it STINKS. Apparently it’s Maverick vs Drones, as the old boy tries to demonstrate to the world that you need human pilots to succeed…and not drones..

“The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay,” explained the producer.

Still, the movie has a new writer, Justin Marks, who wrote Disney’s The Jungle Book, is in negotiations to work on Top Gun 2.

There will be no other original cast members included in the new Top Gun movie, this is a good thing. I mean, Goose is dead and Charlie (Kelly McGillis) sort of looks like Bruce Jenner now, and Bruce Jenner is turning into a woman so.. actually.. maybe Bruce Jenner should play the role of Charlie in the sequel? Tom Skerritt could make a return as Viper, but he’s 81 now.

Loyal blog reader ‘Jeff_Dahmer’ says the role of the lead female has been offered to … get ready for this … Katie Holmes! This was the early stages of the script, when Tommy and his wife were still together though.  ‘Paul In Boston’ wrote us, telling us it was all but confirmed that the lead female role is almost always left up to Tom Cruise to pick, so could Holmes be in this Top Gun sequel? Doubt it.

The Top Gun Sequel will probably suck a fair amount. no matter where it takes place. We are really interested to see how they play this out. Will it really be based on an older Maverick returning to Miramar to teach the young pilots? Is it true Jester (Michael Ironside) will be making a cameo appearance? We will all know in the near future , as the script rolls out so does the insider gossip on the plot. You have to consider that this script is 3 years in the making, and was originally supposed to be a 2012.

Boring Fast Fact

I lost my virginity to ‘Take My Breath Away’ in 1986.  Seems like yesterday I was rolling around the streets in my Nissan Pulsar,  picking up chicks and rocking hard to my Top Gun Soundtrack cassette. 6×9 speakers, and Highway To The Danger Zone! fellas…  bring back memories? Right guys? right? *High Five*

Top Gun 2 Release Date

Look for Top Gun 2 to hit theaters in 2016 at this point … it depends if Jerry can convince his buddies that people have the need, THE NEED FOR SPEED. (See what I just did there?).

Who’s In the sequel?

Tom Cruise… that’s it for now, and maybe Bruce Jenner to play the female lead of Charlie.

What’s Good About It?

Fighter Jets and a decent production team. I can finally pull out my old leather jacket and wear it again proudly.

What’s Bad About It?

Not sure how they could improve on the original. Have you seen what happened to Kelly McGillis? I don’t want to say she looks like Rocky Dennis, but well.. she does. I guess a lot of you don’t know who Rocky Dennis is, and why am I bringing up a reference to the hit 1980’s movie Mask? What are your thoughts on another Top Gun? The first one was great for its day, why the need to make another one? Wouldn’t it have made sense to just remake the franchise under a different name? Does anyone care?

    Dudley ‘Booger’ Dawson,

Look what happened to Willie Wonka – remake (sucked), Planet of the Apes (remake, what remake? it wasnt even the same damn movie! Tim Burton is the only person who could ruin a remake of Porkys. – And to see Tom Cruise play the part of an old man? The idea of it is enough to make you want to play miniature golf instead of sit in the theater eating a $5 dollar hotdog or plastic wrapped pre-popped popcorn.

There is no current star on the market today that anyone wants to see play the “stud”. And anyone who tries is bound to make an ass of himself.

The only thing that could turn this movie on is lots of T and A. Other than that – a big embarrassment is in the making.

The original Top Gun can never ever be re-created and attempting to do so is a mistake. Hailed as my favorite movie of all time, Top Gun was more than just F-14’s turning and burning. It encompassed a generation during a time when patriotism was at an all-time high when President Reagan was still in office. Little was known at the time of what real Navy pilots did and so it took you a little deeper into the world of these true valiant heroes that inspired those of us who were young and ready for the world. Movies that become iconic come out at the right time for the right reasons and Top Gun was one of those movies that fit right in with the 80’s. As we all know, the world is a very different place now and with patriotism waxing and waning depending upon which side of the wars you are on can have an impact on how we view the military now. Fighter jets are on the decline with new UAV’s becoming the norm. The original movie put the F-14 on the map. Making another Top Gun would be a huge dissapointment, no matter how good the script, because those of us who grew up on the original would only be looking at the nostalgia of the past. I say let this movie stand alone without ruining it will a sequel. It is too good to ever try to re-do. Top Gun was not just a movie, it was an attitude and a reflection of the generation of its time. Please do not remake this movie. Thank you.
