The Words (2012)

The Words is about a young writer who pays a dear price for stealing the words of another writer.

I’ve read a few reviews of The Words, as it was at Sundance and did pretty well, but I don’t want to really give their impressions of the film, as most people are stupid.

The story seems to be mostly about literature and art. Authorship is clearly a big part of the story as well.

Bradley Cooper is Rory Jansen, a poor young writer who can’t get anything published. He gets married and honeymoons in Paris. While there, he uncovers a manuscript that was clearly either hidden or lost. Rory reads it, realizes it’s great, and shows it to his wife. She thinks it’s his and pushes him to publish it. He does and it’s a success.

The actual writer is an older man, who comes to Rory and tells him the story of the manuscript. I guess this part of the story is a period piece, as it goes to WWII, and there is a love affair gone wrong, and the book is written.

Rory tries to make right by the man, giving him money or crediting him, and it appears the guilt of his plagiarism overwhelms him. Not sure how it ends, but it’s a cool sounding story nonetheless.

The Words

The Words was written and directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal. This is their first movie, though they wrote an early draft of TRON: Legacy.

What’s Good About It?

The Words has a solid cast and the reviews have been pretty good. I like the sound of the story as well.

What’s Bad About It?

The Words may not be the most commercial film, and while that isn’t bad in and of itself, it may mean the budget was low, and it may not have been made as well as it could have been.

Our Clever Prediction

The reviews for The Words have been good so far. I look forward to seeing it. Will it make a ton of money? No. I also don’t think it’ll get a lot of award love, though it seems like it did okay at Sundance.
