The Loneliest Planet (2012)

The Loneliest Planet is a drama about a couple backpacking through Georgia who come across some armed rebels and something happens that changes the dynamic of their relationship forever.

I’m actually not sure exactly what the incident is, but it appears to be quite substantial, because it leads to a wide variety of revelations about the characters, especially the male lead, here played by Gael Garcia Bernal, who appears to have a hidden history.

The couple are engaged and having a last great trip before their marriage. I don’t know what the nature of the incident is, but it appears to be quite substantial, given how thoroughly it fucks up their day. After that it seems they deal with the fallout for the rest of the story.

The Loneliest Planet

Julia Loktev is the writer/director of The Loneliest Planet, and though she doesn’t have a ton of experience the film has received a lot of praise and won a few awards already, so she’s handling the project well enough.

What’s Good About It?

The rave reviews and interesting trailer lead me to think this film will be quite suspenseful and firmly rooted in the characters, and that can only be a good thing.

What’s Bad About It?

I don’t know what the big incident is, though it seems to be one that’s both very small and yet completely life-changing. If it’s a satisfying moment this might turn out to be a great film.

Our Clever Prediction

I don’t see The Loneliest Planet making a whole lot of money, as the stars aren’t terribly famous and it’s getting a limited release, but this could be a very important film for making the stars and director more of a commodity in Hollywood.
