Smashed is an indie drama getting rave reviews for the lead performances, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul, who portray a young couple who over drink and try to cut back on their alcohol consumption.
This young couple is married, and they have built much of their loving relationship on their love of drinking. The wife starts to have some problems, and their relationship is put to the test when she decides to clean up her act.
The wife’s name is Kate, and she struggles at work and in her relationships because of her drinking. She’s weaved a fairly complex series of lies to accommodate her drinking, and it’s beginning to catch up with her. Her relationship with her mom is strained, and she likes her job as a schoolteacher, but it’s not easy to work that job hungover, which I get the impression she is quite a lot.
I get the impression Kate will be the primary focus of the film, and as such Mary Elizabeth Winstead is getting a lot of praise for her performance.
Smashed
Smashed comes from director James Ponsoldt, who hasn’t made very many films so far, so this is really his big chance. We’ll see if he can handle the responsibility of the film. It is a little indie project though, so no doubt it’s not that big a deal if he is a miserable fail.

What’s Good About It?
The trailer looks good for Smashed, and the reviews the leads are getting are quite good. Aaron Paul is less of a surprise in this regard, as he has a fair bit of experience playing an addict on Breaking Bad, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been mostly working in action, horror and other genre pics that require less challenging acting. That’s not to say she hasn’t been good, but this is her first big chance at a meaty acting role and it looks like it’s going to be quite the success!
What’s Bad About It?
I don’t have anything except that Smashed has a limited release.
Our Clever Prediction
I don’t expect Smashed to be a massive hit, but it should be halfway decent, and I think it’ll help Winstead get some better roles in the future. I read an interview she did for the film a little while back, and she talked about how she’s auditioned for these types of roles before but they’ve always gone to better known actresses. I think this is going to be a big chance for her, and potentially one she can exploit fully to become a big name actress and marry me and have babies with me and cuddle with me and be mine forever I MUST HAVE HER…
